Duties Summary

Repairs and overhauls a variety of heavy vehicle and medium and heavy construction equipment such as, but not limited to, refuse trucks, ladder trucks, dump trucks, truck tractors, cranes, bulldozers, rollers, graders, loaders, backhoes, scrappers, hydraulic cranes, and extractors as a substantially full-time assignment; and performs other related duties as required.

Qualification Requirements

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

Your possession of the required amount of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for the position. Overall paid or unpaid experience must be of such scope and responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that you have the ability to perform the duties of the position.

Note: Calculation of experience is based on full-time, 40-hour work weeks and counted up to the last full month prior to the recruitment close date. Part-time experience will be pro-rated. Example: Twelve months of experience at 20 hours per week is equivalent to six months of experience. In addition, hours worked in excess of 40 hours per week will not be credited. Example: Twelve months of experience at 60 hours per week is equivalent to one year, not one and one-half years.

Training & Experience: A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from a high school; and

  • three (3) years of automotive repair experience under a journey level mechanic, or successful completion of apprenticeship training involving heavy vehicle and/or construction equipment repair work; and

  • one (1) year of work experience in construction equipment repair work.

Substitutions Allowed

The following may be substituted for education

  • Four (4) years of full-time general work experience may be substituted for a high school diploma.
  • Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted up to four (4) years of the education requirement (15 semester credits = 6 months).
  • An Associate's, Bachelor's, Master's or PhD degree from an accredited community college, college or university, trades school, etc., may be substituted for the education requirement.

The following may be substitute for experience

  • Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in Automotive Mechanics Technology or a related field from an accredited community college, trades school, may be substituted up to four (4) years of automotive repair experience under a journey level mechanic, or successful completion of apprenticeship training involving heavy vehicle and/or construction equipment repair work (15 semester credits = 6 months).
  • An Associate's degree in Automotive Mechanics Technology or related field from an accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted for two (2) years of automotive repair experience under a journey level mechanic, or successful completion of apprenticeship training involving heavy vehicle and/or construction equipment repair work.
  • Successful completion of semester credits leading towards a degree or diploma in Heavy Equipment Maintenance and Repair or a related field from an accredited community college, trades school, may be substitutedup to four (4) yearsofwork experience in construction equipment repair work (15 semester credits = 6 months).
  • An Associate's degree in Heavy Equipment Maintenance and Repair or related field from an accredited community college, business, or technical school, may be substituted for two (2) years of work experience in construction equipment repair work.

If a degree is used to substitute for the education requirement, it may not be used again towards the experience requirement. If work experience is used to substitute for education, it may not be used again to meet the experience requirement. If the applicant holds more than one degree, transcripts must be provided, and a thorough review will be conducted by the DHR staff in order for more than one degree to be credited towards the minimum qualification requirements. Additional degrees can be considered if obtained independently through mutually exclusive classes from another degree being considered. Substitutions will be used to the advantage of the applicant.

Quality of Experience: Possession of the required number of years of experience will not in itself be accepted as proof of qualification for a position. The applicant's overall experience must have been of such scope and level of responsibility as to conclusively demonstrate that he/she has the ability to perform the duties of the position for which he/she is being considered.

License Requirement: At the time of appointment, the candidate selected for hire will need to possess a valid Class B Commercial Driver's License

Certification Requirement: At time of application filing, applicant will need to possess a validState of Hawai'i Medical Examiner's Certificate.

In addition, possession of a Class A Commercial Driver's License must be obtained prior to completion of probation period.

Knowledge of: Theory and principles of the internal combustion engine; principles of complex hydraulic systems; tools, machines, materials, and practices used in the repair and overhaul of heavy vehicle and construction equipment and their various specialized mechanical and electrical units; operation of various types of heavy vehicle and construction equipment sufficient to conduct road tests; hazard and safety practices applicable to the trade.

Ability to: Diagnose and correct mechanical defects in gasoline and diesel-driven motorized equipment; repair and overhaul a variety of heavy vehicle and construction equipment; read and interpret various manufacturers' manuals in performing work; use appropriate tools and testing equipment; read schematic wiring and hydraulic flow diagrams; understand and follow written and oral instructions; operate motorized equipment; maintain good working relationships with others.

Tests: Applicants may be required to qualify on an appropriate examination.
