Community Doula Navigator - Temporary Full-Time

The Community Doula Navigator position at Woman's Hospital will support the program activities of the Well-Mama Program, a multi-site research project conducted by Northwestern University, Rutgers New Jersey Medical School, John H. Stroger Cook County Hospital, and Woman's Hospital, Baton Rouge. Community Doula Navigators (CDNs) will serve the combined roles of doulas, community health workers, and patient navigators to address the top drivers of maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity for pregnant and postpartum Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) women.

Community Doula Navigators will provide support to:
Increase access to and use of healthcare services,
Increase patient engagement and trust,
Mitigate experiences of racism and discrimination in healthcare, and
Strengthen care coordination.

Duties will center around providing support for patients in-person and telehealth check-ins on priority areas such as mental health, cardiovascular symptoms, safety, opioid/substance abuse, and social support in addition to virtual support groups and labor support.

Please note the CDN will not provide clinical care in this setting.

Management of 3 or more live births is required and Doula certification or enrollment in Doula training is highly preferred.

Requirements:

  • High School diploma or equivalent is required.
  • Management of 3 or more live births is required.
  • Candidates must be currently certified as a Doula or be actively enrolled in a doula training program with experience in attending births
  • Proficiency in the English language is required.
  • IRB CITI Training must be completed before interacting with any participants - recertification is required every 3 years.
  • Ability to work comfortably with patients and various members of medical staff.
  • Excellent listening, communication, and organization skills.
  • Passion for health equity issues and increased healthcare access for BIPOC and/or women.


Responsibilities:

  • Deliver perinatal care support according to the program protocols.
  • Bridge communication between patients and healthcare providers.
  • Collaborate and communicate with research project team members
  • Participate in shadowing sessions and orientation meetings with clinical team members.
  • Provide continuous labor support during active labor, including but not limited to emotional, physical, informational, and communications support. (Advocate for patient needs and preferences)


Schedule:

Temporary Full-Time; Grant-funded position

Schedule flexibility is required

Position housed in the LSU OB/GYN Clinic at Woman's Hospital

Pay Range:

Hourly/Non-Exempt

$18.93 - $26.74
