HLR is looking for a qualified Senior Environmental Scientist to join our dynamic team. In this role, you will manage a variety of environmental work on both transportation and utility projects. Ensuring that each project is completed according to established objectives, within budget, and on schedule to meet our client's needs and expectations is crucial. The Senior Environmental Scientist will also assist with training environmental scientists in field and office tasks.

Our ideal candidate will have an excellent understanding of environmental and natural sciences, and knowledge of federal, state, and county requirements. Duties And Responsibilities

Manage a variety of environmental work on both transportation and utility

  • Accurately scope environmental tasks, permits and timelines required to complete municipal, transportation, and utility projects
  • Delegate tasks to most effectively utilize staff skill sets
  • Complete and/or oversee project tasks to ensure critical paths are met
  • Write and/or review reports and permitting submittals
  • Complete and QA/QC field work including wetland delineations and other environmental studies
  • Attend project meetings in the field or office
  • Effectively communicate with coworkers, colleagues, and clients to build and maintain a team-based atmosphere and deliver a superior client experience
  • Develop project scopes and cost estimates, and manage projects effectively within those budgets
  • Manage project administration activities

Assist with the training of environmental scientists in field and office tasks

Education
  • Bachelor's degree from a four-year college or university in biology, botany, environmental science, geology, or related field

Required Experience and Skills
  • 8+ years of work experience in the environmental field
  • Knowledge of Federal, State, and County requirements
  • Knowledge of Midwestern native plant communities, and native and invasive plant identification and terminology skills

Training and experience in the following areas:
  • Wetland delineations and reporting (PWS or CWS)
  • Wetland and stormwater permitting on national and county levels
  • Environmental studies such as tree surveys, threatened and endangered species surveys, and vegetative floristic quality assessments
  • Erosion and sediment control best management practices
  • Experience working with environmental, regulatory and land use agencies, such as: U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, S. Fish & Wildlife Service, Kane, Lake, DuPage, McHenry County Stormwater Ordinances and permitting, Illinois Department of Natural Resources, and Illinois State Historic Preservation Office

Nice-to-Haves
  • Water and soil contamination testing and analysis experience (CCDD, PESAs, Ph 1 ESAs, and PSIs)
  • Certified Arborist
  • Stormwater management inspection and compliance documentation (CPESC/CESSWI/DECI)
  • Experience with design and construction oversight for green infrastructure
  • Experience with obtaining environmental grants
