GPS Technician (Construction)

The GPS Technician is a seasonal position intended to support horizontal and vertical excavation controls, material placement, pavement milling, and asphalt paving operations. The technician will be an essential crew member for various aspects of the construction process for multiple projects around Bismarck. Specifically, setting up GPS and total station positioning equipment, calibrating sites, loading 3D models onto machine-controlled equipment and rover data collectors, line and grade verification, and point stakeout. The technician would also work with equipment operators and management staff, confirming that all planned and specified lines and grades are being achieved. Additional responsibilities would include reading and understanding construction plans, setting up and takedown of GPS base and rover receivers, and total stations and related handheld equipment. Must have the ability to follow all Strata Corporation company policies and procedures for a safe working environment and work outdoors in varying weather conditions around heavy equipment and other machinery. The assistant must also adhere to the project's PPE (personal protective equipment) requirements and maintain individual PPE in a functional condition as supplied by the company.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and take down various types of site positioning and grade control equipment
  • Care for and adequately use high precision measurement systems in a field setting
  • Use field software designed for Heavy/Highway Construction projects
  • Set line and grade stakes for various aspects of the construction process
  • Participate in safety meetings as required

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to work in a field environment with inclement weather, extreme heat, dust, and noise
  • Must be able to carry handheld measurement equipment weighing up to 15 lbs. and lift equipment cases and accessories weighing up to 50 lbs.
  • Must be able to work extended hours and a typical 6-day work week

Experience/Qualifications/Education

  • Basic surveying skills and understanding preferred
  • High school diploma and secondary education degree in the Construction, Engineering, or Surveying field
  • General knowledge and understanding of Heavy/Highway Construction projects

Compensation

Compensation package is dependent upon qualifications and experience

Must possess current valid driver's license and pass pre-employment drug testing and background check.
