Job Description

To perform a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled work, and operates a variety of equipment in the mowing and maintenance of roadway right-of-ways for the City of Killeen.
Essential Duties

Mows/trims vegetation in roadway right-of-ways; removes debris, litter from areas required to be maintained, and properly disposes this material.

Operates vehicles, equipment, and tools associated with assigned job duties.

Performs routine or operator's maintenance on assigned vehicles and equipment.

Complies with safety rules, policies, and procedures. Wears personal protective equipment and clothing, and complies with safe working controls.

Serves as Crew Leader in the event of his/her absence.

Provides support to the Drainage Utility during the off-season for mowing operations.

Serves on various employee or other committees as assigned.

Adheres to assigned work schedule as outlined in the Department and City attendance policies and procedures; ensures all behaviors comply with the City's Personnel Rules and Regulations; possesses and maintains a valid driver's license, if required, and complies with City of Killeen driving policy accordingly.

Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Minimum Qualifications

  1. Graduation from high school or equivalent, preferred.
  2. Six months of experience, preferred.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
  1. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
  2. Ability to sustain effective working relationships with other employees and supervisors;
  3. Ability to complete assigned tasks;
  4. Ability to observe proper safety precautions;
  5. Skill in operation of listed tools and equipment;
  6. Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

Supplemental Information

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  1. Must have a valid Texas driver's license by date of hire.
  2. Must have or acquire within two (2) months of date of hire all basic level National Institute Management System (NIMS) certifications as required by the City.
  3. Herbicide Applicator's License in the general/basic and weed categories issued by the Texas Structural Pest Control Board is preferred.

TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED

Various equipment used will include, but not necessarily limited to, Motor vehicle, tractors with mowing attachments, mowers, weed trimmers, edgers, herbicide equipment, phone, calculator, radio, hydraulic powered equipment, safety equipment, maps, and water sampling & testing equipment as required.

The employee is regularly required to sit, climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; talk and hear; and smell. Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate mowing equipment and tools.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in outside weather conditions. The employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and is frequently exposed to wet, cold, hot, and/or humid conditions, fumes or airborne particles and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
