Position Summary

This position is responsible for the maintenance and protection of the grounds, walkways, roads, planting beds, and all other outside areas of the College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Cutting lawn and field grass using ride-on, stand-on, and/or walk-behind lawn mower.
  • Cold patching
  • Planting, pruning, and trimming of trees, flowers, shrubs, and hedges using power and non-power hedge trimmers and/or saws.
  • Prune ornamental, shade trees and shrubs for aesthetic and maintenance purposes

using arbor culturally sound techniques.* Perform weed abatement using power and manual techniques. Plant, edge, trim, mulch, grade, top dress, de-thatch, seed, and water lawns, flowers, shrubs, and trees as needed.* Ensure that the grounds in and around the campus remain neat and free of litter at all

times.* Perform routine construction and demolition tasks as directed. Must be willing to work overtime when available.* Perform all snow removal tasks which include but are not limited to clearing all roads, lots, walks, paths, and approaches to buildings of snow and ice as needed and/or directed.* Routinely inspect fences and curbs and repair or replace them as needed.* Set up tables, chairs, and other related equipment for events on campus.* Assist faculty and staff with furniture moves on campus as directed.* Other duties as assigned.

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma/GED or Vocational School Diploma.
  • 2 to 3 years of commercial-related work experience.
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must have and maintain a valid Massachusetts Hoisting Engineer's license to operate machinery.

  • The individual must be able to complete tasks with minimum supervision.
  • Must have knowledge of all potential occupational hazards associated with the position.
  • Must work and adhere to all safety standards and practices.
  • Must have knowledge of the standard methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the position.
  • Ability to use tools and equipment pertinent to the position, which includes staging, lifts, ladders, and all hand and power tools common to the position.
  • Must be willing and able to access all areas of the campus.
  • Must be willing and able to work at various heights and in limited area crawl spaces in order to repair and maintain necessary operations.
  • Must be willing and able to work extra hours when available.
  • Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance is required.
  • Ability to Interrelate with diverse individuals including colleagues, students, and managers as needed to get the job done.
  • Must treat fellow employees, students, staff, faculty, and visitors to the College with respect.
  • Perform snow removal and/or plowing.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate but can be loud while working with machinery, tools, and/or equipment. The employee must be able to work in outside weather conditions which may include exposure to rain, wind, snow, extreme heat, and humidity. The individual is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes and/or airborne particles, and toxic chemicals. The individual frequently works near mechanical parts and/or near moving equipment and tools. Proper PPE will be provided.

Licenses/Certifications

  • A valid Massachusetts Driver's license is required.
  • Must have and maintain a valid class 2B Massachusetts Hoisting Engineers license.
