JOB SUMMARY

This position performs journey-level electrical work in the construction, installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and fixtures in campus-wide buildings and facilities; assists skilled technicians in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance, repair, alteration and construction of college buildings, facilities, and fixtures including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and painting; and performs related work as required. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Plans layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, based on job specifications and local codes.
  • Connects wires to circuit breakers, transformers, or other components.
  • Tests electrical systems or continuity of circuits in electrical wiring, equipment, or fixtures, using testing devices, such as ohmmeters, voltmeters, or oscilloscopes, to ensure compatibility and safety of system.
  • Uses a variety of tools or equipment, such as power construction equipment, measuring devices, power tools, and testing equipment, such as oscilloscopes, ammeters, or test lamps.
  • Inspects electrical systems, equipment, or components to identify hazards, defects, or the need for adjustment or repair, and to ensure compliance with codes.
  • Creates construction or installation diagrams.
  • Participates in remodeling of campus buildings and facilities including submitting cost estimates to supervisor.
  • Inspects campus buildings and facilities to identify maintenance needs and safety issues.
  • Participates in performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled work in the maintenance and repair of college buildings, facilities, and fixtures including electrical, plumbing, carpentry, mechanical, and painting.
  • Cleans and maintains tools and equipment.
  • Loads and unloads equipment and supplies.
  • Troubleshoots and diagnoses routine equipment and system problems; schedules and performs routine repair work or parts replacement.
  • Monitors and maintains accurate records on preventive maintenance/repair work completed.
  • Responds as needed to emergency situations requiring maintenance and repair work.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS TO PERFORM WORK:
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Four (4) years of experience in performing journey-level plumbing work.
  • Certification in Electrical systems preferred.


KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Knowledge of basic arithmetic and units of measure
  • Knowledge of the standard practices and methods of electrical trade.
  • Skill in the performance of duties related to the electrical trade.
  • Skill in the use and care of the tools and equipment with the electrical trade.
  • Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the tasks performed and equipment employed.
  • Ability to interpret and work from sketches.
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
  • Ability to communicate effectively.
  • Knowledge of safety practices relevant to the area of employment.
  • Ability to organize, plan and prioritize work.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

Work requires the ability to lift 50 to 75 pounds independently and be able to perform strenuous physical labor, and the ability to exert 50 to 75 pounds of force frequently. May be required to use a ladder or scaffolding. Also requires frequent bending, squatting, standing, reaching, climbing, kneeling, stooping, crawling, and occasional sitting. May be required to occasionally work in small, hard to reach spaces. Work is performed both inside a facility and outdoors in all weather conditions. Some hazardous situations may exist based on work to be performed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Work environment may risk exposure to bright/dim light, dusts and pollen, extreme heat and/or cold, wet or humid conditions, extreme noise levels, vibration, fumes and/or noxious odors, moving machinery, electrical shock, heights, disease/pathogens, toxic/caustic chemicals.
