The City of La Habra is conducting a recruitment to fill the position of Assistant Day Camp Manager in the Community Services Department for the summer months approximately from June thru August. The Assistant Day Camp Manager will work approximately 20 to 30 hours per week with the availability to work additional hours.

ABOUT THE DIVISION:
The Recreation Division oversees special events, trips and tours, youth and adult classes, day camp, aquatics, sport facilities, facility reservations, senior programs, teen programs, and supervision of 15 parks, the skateboard park, and two splash pads. We also manage three social media platforms; work very closely with the school districts, business community and non-profit organizations. We pride ourselves by delivering quality programs and great customer service.

ABOUT THE POSITION:
Under general supervision; assists day camp manager in planning, organizing, and coordinating a wide variety of recreational day camp and Kids Night Out programs for children throughout the city. May be assigned the duties of the day camp manager in their absence. Fulfills duties of day camp recreation leaders. May be assigned to work additional city events at supervisor's discretion. This position will be required to work the City of La Habra's Annual 4th of July event and other City Wide special events as needed, including some days post and prior to event.

SUMMER HIRING JOB FAIR: Qualified Candidates will be invited to participate in the examination process which will consist of an oral panel interview. The interview will take place at the Summer Hiring Job Fair which is scheduled for Saturday, March 23, 2024 from 9:00 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. and will take place at City Hall, 110 E. La Habra Blvd., La Habra, CA 90631.

Examples of Duties

(Duties may include, but are not limited to the following):

  • Assists the day camp manager in planning, training, initiating, organizing and supervising the day camp program for the city.
  • Assists in maintaining safety and cleanliness of the day camp facility during day camp hours.
  • Responsible for scheduling and assigning teen leaders.
  • Assists in selection of staff and teen leaders.
  • Relieves the day camp manager.
  • Assists in training and supervising staff of day camp recreation leaders and teen leaders.
  • Sets standards for selection of teen leaders.
  • Serves as a mentor to teen leaders.
  • Assists with staff evaluations.
  • Conducts teen leader evaluations.
  • Trains teen leaders throughout the summer.
  • Selects lesson plans prepared by day camp recreation leaders and implements them into the weekly itinerary.
  • Creates weekly itineraries.
  • Assists in the collection and processing of day camp fees as necessary.
  • Assists in organizing all items and dcor of the day camp facility at the beginning of day camp and organizes/returns all items to storage at the conclusion of day camp.
  • Must be aware of emergency first aid procedures.
  • Ensures emergency binder is current.
  • Updates social media with program information.
  • Observes the day camp facility for safety and security purposes.
  • Provides excellent customer service and detailed program information to the general public.
  • Conducts staff and teen leader trainings and weekly meetings.
  • Organizes, promotes, demonstrates and conducts special events including, but not limited to Kid's Night Out.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Typical Qualifications

QUALIFYING KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of:
  • Basic child development, day camp activities, and any future programs.
  • Thorough knowledge of emergency procedures.
  • All City, County, and State laws governing the administration of childcare facilities.
Ability to:
  • Plan, organize, supervise and train a wide range of day camp activities for ages 4-12.
  • Assist in hiring staff.
  • Supervise specialized staff.
  • Establish good working relationships with staff and the citizens.
  • Provide excellent customer service to the Community and maintain effective working relationships with persons of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.

Supplemental Information

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:
Any combination of education and experience that provides the qualifying knowledge, skills, and abilities. Experience working with the public is required. Experience and/or education working with children are highly desirable.

Must be at least 18 years of age in order to apply. Bilingual (English/Spanish) is highly desirable.

Two years of experience as a day camp recreation leader or in other capacities working with children. Customer service experience working with the public at a front counter or reception area.

Graduation from high school or equivalent. Early Childhood Education units or an Associate's Degree from an accredited college/university is highly desirable.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Must possess and maintain a valid California Class C driver's license and be CPR/First Aid certified.

WORK DEMANDS:
Recreation workers are employed in a variety of settings, including recreation centers, parks, summer camps, local summer schools, splash pads, and residential care facilities. Many workers spend much of their time being physically active in the outdoors. Outdoor field environment; exposure to traffic, noise, dust, fumes and inclement weather conditions. Travel from site to site. The employee is occasionally required to encounter unpleasant social situations (i.e. dealing with irate or disturbed individuals).
