POSITION PURPOSE: The Applications Scientist is positioned in the commercial division to enhance demand for the Company's products by applying their scientific knowledge of materials characterization and research skills to solve real-world problems.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES: Applications Scientists conducts demonstrations of the Company's products and provides training and support to customers, sales staff, and other scientists who use our products. This position can bridge the gap between Micromeritics and our customers through research publications, online seminars, and in-person demonstrations. Additionally, this position provides critical information for new product development and marketing.

POSITION DUTIES & WORK TASKS:

  • Maintain, as our top priority, the health and safety of ourselves, coworkers, customers, and communities in which we do business.
  • Adhere to a professional code of ethics for researchers in science.
  • Provide high-level scientific input and applications support for all products during the sales process.
  • Conduct product demonstrations, training, and instruction to customers on applications and instrument operation.
  • Act as the company's representative for customer technical assistance, consultation, and problem-solving related to the scientific and technical aspects of the company's products and services.
  • Provides the scientific linkage of our products capabilities and limitations to external customers and internal groups (marketing, product development, service/sales, research & development, and laboratory services).
  • Drive innovation through research-based publications of technical papers, reports, articles, and studies, etc.
  • Interpret collected technical data for sales and lab services.
  • Conduct on-line seminars, demonstrations, or training for internal and external customers.
  • Participate in scientific conferences, trade shows, and other industry events.
  • Provides linkage of industry trends and voice of the customer feedback to internal Product Development, Marketing, and R&D groups.

WORK EXPERIENCE: Research experience working with various materials (particulates, powders, fluids, etc.), and performing analytical tests such as particle size, shape, and surface area characterization.

KNOWLEDGE:
  • Knowledge of physical sciences and research methods relating to chemistry, materials science, or chemical engineering.
  • Understanding of the principles and applications of the Company's product portfolio and the various particle characterization techniques such as chemisorption & physisorption, density, particle size, permeability & pore analysis, powder flow & rheology, and surface area.
  • Understands importance of Good Laboratory Practices (GLP).
  • Understanding of calibration, record keeping, and laboratory quality management practices.
  • Knowledge of document management and laboratory information systems.

SKILLS:
  • Can choose appropriate research techniques and instruments used for sample analysis, analyzing and interpreting results, statistical analysis, etc.
  • Can identify appropriate research, analysis, and problem-solving techniques required for various materials.
  • Can conduct quality scientific research through proper preparation and handling of samples, control of contamination, sample dispersion(s), use of lab equipment.
  • Continual learning and study to remain updated on latest developments and trends in particular area of expertise.
  • Collaborative and teamwork skills to effectively work with other peers, engineers, developers, marketers, etc.
  • Project management skills to plan and manage multiple experiments and projects with identified schedules.

ABILITIES:
  • Application of the scientific method
  • Critical thinking to analyze issues and select appropriate techniques for sample types.
  • Can create professional reports and assessments based on data collection.
  • Utilize a variety of communication tools, visual presentation, and related multimedia.
  • Can read and understand technical drawings, specifications, and comprehend the operating instructions for various lab instruments.
  • Intermediate to advanced proficiency of MS Office 365 applications.

EDUCATION: Ph.D. or master's degree in chemistry, material science, or chemical engineering (or equivalent field of study).
