Safety Specialist

Summary/Objective

The Safety Specialist will be responsible for establishing safety initiatives focused on driving safety culture. The Safety Specialist is also responsible for ensuring practices and policies are compliant with legal and internal safety and environmental regulations. The Safety Specialist will spearhead the safety culture throughout the company by pushing through safety projects, developing safety policies and procedures, and ensuring continuous improvement of the site safety programs. Assist in the implementation of a TPM program. Work with maintenance and operators to establish, train and follow up on the TPM program.


Essential Functions

  • Responsible for management and administration of site Environmental Health & Safety initiatives.
  • Responsible for implementation and administration of TPM program.
  • Must have flexibility to support a workforce that operates two shifts.
  • Lead, implement, and maintain safety and health processes that proactively target injury/illness/incident prevention.
  • Oversee safety committee initiatives and encourage employee participation as part of a strong safety culture.
  • Ensure compliance to state, local, and federal environment management/compliance requirements.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate regular OHSE training for co-workers, including new employees and continual education of existing employees.
  • Coordinate Environmental Health & Safety Management system.
  • Compile and maintain applicable recordkeeping and issue monthly and annual reports.
  • Oversee site Emergency Response team and facilitate annual training and certifications.
  • Lead internal and external safety/environmental audits.
  • Ensure proper and timely investigation of all near misses, injuries and other safety-related incidents that have occurred, including root cause analysis and company response; maintain meticulous records.
  • Manage the full life-cycle of an injury until employee is back to full duty, including close collaboration with management, HR and the impacted employee.
  • Prepare and file all necessary regulatory reports and responses.
  • Act as site Safety Champion and implement safety initiatives.
  • Work with maintenance to establish preventative measures for all machines.
  • Champion the TPM program and maintain all records to follow up on issues or concerns.
  • Work with maintenance and operators to turn problems into opportunities for improvement.
  • Participate in Continuous Improvement initiatives.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

This is a full-time position, Monday through Friday, with occasional weekend work as needed.

Travel

This position requires limited travel (less than 10% of the time).

Required Education and Experience

  • 2+ years of experience in OHSE leadership in a manufacturing environment
  • Bachelor s degree in engineering or OHSE or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Knowledge of federal, state and local safety regulations, protocols and procedures
  • OSHA and/or other regulatory certification(s) are preferred.
  • Broad knowledge of all OHSE procedures, principles, and regulations
  • Experience with agency auditing protocols
