General Statement of Duties

The Trades Specialist position is an intermediate level technician position and is essential to the daily operations of the Facilities Operations Division. The employee in this position provides maintenance for the heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Work is performed for over 50 County properties to include the Law Enforcement Detention Centerand various Forsyth County Parks equipment. The work involves preventative maintenance and repairs to the HVAC equipment. Specific examples of work include: Changing air filters, adjusting, replacing belts and lubricating equipment, troubleshooting, charging HVAC equipment, soldering and brazing, use of a multi- meter, calibrating and changing t-stat,rebuilding pumpsand navigatingbuilding automation programs.

Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. - 5:00 P.M.

Distinguishing Features

An employee in this class will be responsible for the electrical maintenance of Forsyth County facilities, including the Law Enforcement Detention Center (LEDC). The employee must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by reviews of completed assignments and performance appraisals.

This position requires

Considerable knowledge of the use of hand and power tools.

Knowledge of building automation systems,

knowledgeand ability to perform preventative and general maintenance on HVAC systems.Knowledge of basic and advanced building components in relation to HVAC systems.

Ability to read and interpret instructions and safety procedures.Ability to read schematics, work plans and wiring diagrams.

Ability to determine and correct malfunctions.

Ability to assist in the installation and repair of pumps, motors, fan coils and piping.

Ability to identify various safety hazards associated with the job and methods of preventing accidents.

Must be able to perform system testing using equipment such as airflow meters, humidity recorders,multi-meters.

Computer skills and the ability to use various software programs.

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.Maintain effective working relationships.

Minimum Education and Experience

  • Graduation from high school or GED
  • At least three years of maintenance experience in the HVAC trade
  • A valid NC drivers license is required
  • Must have demonstrated ability to perform semi-skilled to skilled maintenance work includingthe operation of various equipment and tools
  • Completion of a technical school program or certification in the relevant trade preferred
  • This position is subject to working in high security areas governed by the US Department of Justice's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Security Policy and therefore requires successfully passing a more stringent criminal background check
  • A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Maintains and repairs general HVAC components.

Completes routine troubleshooting on residential HVAC units to include checking for proper supply voltage, checking fuses, belts, dirty coils, rotation of equipment.

Completes repairs/replacements to residential HVAC components to include fan motors,compressors,capacitors, pump couplings, and belts.

Adjusts and calibrates pneumatic thermostats.

Performs routine preventative maintenance of HVAC system components.

Navigates various Building Automation systems.

Completes daily work orders which include, but are not limited to: performing preventive maintenanceand corrective work on HVAC systems,as well as escorting outside contractors doing work at Forsyth County facilities.

Participates or assist in special projects, such as rebuilding pumps or changing compressor as well as afterhourspreventive maintenance projects.

Assists Skilled Trades Specialists in completing tasks and responsibilities, performs related work as required.
