We are looking for responsible and reliable staff who are interested in new skills, want to earn transferrable experience, and like being outside. We are hiring for full- and part-time, seasonal maintenance staff to assist our professional Public Works team for the spring-fall months in the maintenance and repair of city streets, parks, and infrastructure.

These positions will work a flexible schedule. Staff will be expected to work during Summerfest, including Saturday, June 29. Working other weekends will generally not be required.

What does this include? Rotating work in one of our various areas of expertise such as:

  • Preserving and enhancing city natural areas such as lakes, ponds, wooded areas & prairies
  • Mowing grass, maintaining facilities and equipment, and preparing athletic fields for play
  • All things streets: repairing, crack sealing, street sweeping, signage
  • Working with the city's water system and storage, sanitary systems, and hydrants

Due to the nature of our activities, we cannot accommodate extensive time-off requests, so please keep that in mind when applying.

Perform turf maintenance in and around park, trail and recreational facilities
  • Mow and trim grass, trees, and shrubs
  • Renovate heavily used areas including topdressing, seeding, sodding, aerification
Prepare athletic field surfaces for use
  • Lay out, paint, and maintain field lines
  • Drag and level aglime surfaces

Perform tree-care maintenance in parks, open spaces, and along trails
  • Water, fertilize, spray trees and forested areas
  • Remove wood waste and undesirable vegetation

Maintain landscape
  • Prepare planting sites and installs materials according to design
  • Water, weed, transplant, thin and mulch new and established plant beds
Complete routine maintenance of parks, buildings, play areas, and trails
  • Repair or report items requiring repair (i.e., broken benches, bleachers, play structures, holes) as needed
  • Pick up and dispose of trash and glass

Perform a variety of repair and maintenance work on asphalt streets
  • Prepare street for bituminous patching, crack filling, and overlays
  • Sweep city streets for debris removal and water quality measures.
Equipment use and operation
  • Ensure cleanliness of equipment inside and out during and after use.
  • Report all equipment damage and accident to supervisor immediately.

Conduct various preventative maintenance activities on municipal water system.
Performs preventative maintenance functions on sanitary sewer system.
  • Operates or assists in the operation of sewer cleaning equipment, such as sewer jet, vector or other related equipment.


Keeps supervisor promptly informed of all significant matters they must know to perform they position responsibilities effectively.

Minimum qualifications

  • 18 years of age
  • Class D Driver's License with a driving record that is acceptable to the city's insurance carrier

Seasonal employees are eligible for Earned Sick and Safe Time (ESST) as required by Minnesota Statutes 181.9447, subdivision 9.

Employees will accrue ESST at the rate of one (1) hour for every thirty (30) hours worked, up to 48 hours a year. Employees must work at least 80 hours in a year to be eligible to use ESST.

Employees will be provided the complete ESST policy at time of orientation which explains how ESST can be used.
