Description

Position Summary: Under the general supervision of the Manager of Equipment Operators, the Maintenance Mechanic II performs preventive maintenance and skilled repairs on Tribal heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment; performing related work assigned. The Maintenance Mechanic II is capable of the full range of mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, gasoline and diesel repair and maintenance required for all Tribal trucks and equipment.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Road tests, inspects, and troubleshoots heavy-duty trucks and construction equipment to assess their condition and determine needed repairs, discuss equipment problems with users, and consult with other parties necessary.
  • Tunes, repairs, and performs overhauls of gasoline and diesel engines.
  • Adjusts, repairs, replaces and/or rebuilds carburetors, fuel injection systems, and other fuel system components.
  • Installs, troubleshoots, adjusts, replaces, repairs, and rewires electrical components such as ignitions, signals, lights, air bag systems, and electrical controls including computer-controlled components.
  • Repairs and rebuilds hydraulic and pneumatic apparatus such as backhoes, loaders, forklifts, and prepares cylinders for precision grinding.
  • Adjusts and repairs or rebuilds drum and disk braking systems, valves, master cylinders, pneumatic, or other hydraulic controls and anti-lock braking systems.
  • Repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.
  • Adjusts, repairs, overhauls, or prepares for job shop automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, transfer cases, power take off drives, clutches, and related drive train components.
  • Uses welding and cutting equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.
  • Performs limited body and frame repair of Tribal vehicles and equipment.
  • Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.
  • Repairs and maintains handheld and walk behind power equipment.
  • Keeps accurate written and computerized records of work performed as well as time and materials used by job and vehicle.
  • Documents all repair and maintenance records for each vehicle to comply with DOT standards.
  • Performs on-site field repairs to stationary or disabled equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


Qualifications

Qualifications:
  • Extensive knowledge and use of the tools and equipment needed to service or repair heavy-duty trucks, construction equipment, and snow removal equipment including hydraulics.
  • Understanding of principles and practices of gasoline and diesel engine maintenance and repair required.
  • Proficiency using computerized diagnostic testing and troubleshooting equipment, as well as welding equipment required.
  • Ability to understand and oversee computerized record keeping and procurement.
  • Ability to understand and oversee body and frame repair.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with equipment users and other shop personnel.
  • Ability to read and interpret repair manuals and schematic diagrams.
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent, supplemented by vocational training or courses in automotive and/or equipment maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Three years of progressive responsibility in automotive and/or heavy equipment mechanic experience preferred; or completion of an apprenticeship program leading to journey-level status as an equipment mechanic.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver's License and be insurable under the Tribe's insurance policy.
  • Must be able to lift and maneuver heavy parts and equipment, work out-of-doors in inclement weather, and work in tight or confined conditions.
  • Must be willing and able to obtain a class A driver's license in the future.
  • Able to interact professionally with a diverse population.
