Summary

The Radiologic Special Procedure Technologist is responsible for use of complex radiographic equipment in completing specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures such as angiography, vessel embolization, chemo-infusions, etc.

Responsibilities

Performs specialized diagnostic and interventional procedures and operates specialized equipment. Prepares sterile fields and proper equipment for specialized procedures. Provides radiation protection in accordance with prescribed age-specific safety standards.. Detects and reports to supervisor any malfunction of the equipment and accessories. Makes decisions using own best judgment on matters, when supervisor is unavailable. Communicates with and reassures patients. Performs basic duties in patient care, assuming care of physical and psychological needs of the patient during the procedure. Initiates life supporting measures for patients, if necessary. Performs functions while maintaining a sensitivity to the age-specific needs of the patient. Shall be BLS certified. Provides and uses immobilization devices, as required, while adhering to safety standards particular to age-specific needs of the patient. Assists physicians in administering contrast materials. Develops films and adjusts automatic film processing equipment as the workload demands.. Takes required films with proper techniques, timing, and positioning, to ensure good quality control. Participates in the instruction of radiologic technology students and residents by demonstrating techniques used in various highly technical procedures and assists in student performance evaluations. Utilizes appropriate HIS Computer System functions and follows through to record complete or incomplete procedures. Completes laboratory records and reports. Copies pertinent clinical information from Medical Record to radiology request form. Receives on-the-job training in specialized technical areas and attends department in-service programs to learn the use of new equipment and/or advanced techniques. Participates in routine duties, including performance of less specialized procedures, cleaning of equipment and rooms, and daily maintenance of area. Participates in scheduling, stocking and reordering of supplies, equipment repairs and/or work orders for repairs. Possesses and maintains understanding of the principles of growth and development as they pertain to patients in all age populations. Assesses data reflective of the patient's status, and interprets the information needed to identify the patient's requirements. Reviews quarterly CQI Report in section meetings and contributes ideas for Quality Improvement. Demonstrates behaviors of service excellence and CARE values (Compassion, Accountability, Respect and Expertise). Performs all other related job duties as assigned.

Experience

Generally requires 1 to 3 years of related experience.

Education

Associate's degree in Radiology Technology is required. Any Employee who will be performing Point of Care and testing in the Operating Room, Neuro ICU, NICU, PICU, Pedi-ER, Cath Lab and/or Interventional Radiology areas, the educational degree must be verified at the time of hire. Minimum education level required to be verified is Associate's degree.

Ability to handle difficult and stressful situations with critical thinking and professional composure. Ability to understand and follow instructions. Knowledge and skill in use of job appropriate technology and software applications. Must meet and maintain current all unit specific and organizational skills/competencies, certifications/licensures, as required by the nursing area.

Credentials

Valid Florida state license as a Radiology Technologist is required. Employees hired BEFORE 2/1/2017 MUST obtain the required ARRT Certification by 12/31/2019. Employees who have completed training at JHS may be granted a grace period of 6 months upon hire to obtain the required certification. Any new hires with external training must have the required certification at the time of hire. American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification with at least 6 months validity required.

Working Conditions

Physical Requirements - Job function requires extended standing or walking. Must be able to carry objects weighing 21 to 50 pounds. Able to lift or move objects weighing 51 to 100 pounds with the use of appropriate devices. Jobs in this group require frequent visual acuity to perform activities related to extended use of computers. Environmental Conditions - Jobs in this group are required to function in a fast paced environment with occasional high pressure or emergent and stressful situations. Function is subject to inside environmental conditions, with occasional outdoor exposures. Exposure to various environments such as: communicable diseases, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a hospital and medical office environment. May also be exposed to needle sticks, airborne infections, medical gases, X-Ray, chemical exposures and other potential hazards. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when exposed to infectious/clinical hospital environment.
