Definition

This is semi-skilled work in the operation and maintenance of sewer or water utilities plants and systems.

An employee in this class performs semi-skilled tasks in maintenance, repair, and operation of sewer or water utilities equipment.

Works under general supervision on routine assignments; close supervision is received on more difficult assignments.

Characteristic Work

Sewer Bureau: Assists skilled operators in all aspects of operation activities such as the starting, stopping, adjustment, lubrication, cleaning, skimming and servicing of treatment plant equipment and processes. Assists skilled mechanics in overhauling and repairing equipment such as pumps, conveyors, racks, screens, fans, blowers, generators, flushing/cleaning systems, and other related equipment. Independently performs various routine servicing and minor repairs such as packing, oiling, lubricating and adjusting of equipment. Independently uses cleaning/flushing equipment to clean combined sewer overflow (CSO) storage facilities. Performs building repairs and laboring duties such as changing light bulbs, digging ditches, painting, and wiping and cleaning floors, walls, windows, machinery, electric panels, and other equipment. Uses confined space safety equipment in accordance with City safety policies. Hauls material to and from job sites in a pickup truck. Hauls and spreads fill material and topsoil; sows grass seed. Uses various hand tools such as hedge trimmers or weed whackers to maintain landscaping. Uses a pickup truck with a plow attachment to remove snow. Operates pneumatic tools such as jackhammers, chipping hammers, and miscellaneous hand tools such as drills, chain saws, etc. Assists in building repairs. Assists laboratory personnel by cleaning equipment and by collecting and preparing samples for analysis. Performs related work as required.

Water Bureau: Assists skilled operator in rebuilding filter beds, unloading materials, cleaning flocculators and settling basins, etc. Assists skilled mechanic in overhauling and repairing water pressure operating valves, diaphragms, flow meters, elevation gauges, other meters, alum feeders, motors, pumps, chlorine lines, and electrical switchgear. Independently performs routine servicing and minor repairs of equipment. Checks motors for overheating, checks gauges. Performs building repairs and other laboring duties such as changing light bulbs, digging ditches, painting, wiping and cleaning floors, walls, windows, machinery, electric panels, and other equipment. Hauls material to and from job sites in a pickup truck. Hauls and spreads fill material and topsoil; sows grass seed. Mows grass with a tractor. Uses various hand tools such as hedge trimmers or weed whackers to maintain landscaping. Uses a pickup truck with a plow attachment to remove snow. Grades roads. Assists in building and repairing fences. Installs and removes dam flashboards. Collects water samples for lab analysis. Operates outboard motor boat and spreads copper sulfate on reservoir water. Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Graduation from an accredited high school or GED and a minimum of one year of general laboring or machine/equipment operation paid experience, or an equivalent combination of paid experience and training. THE EQUIVALENCY STATEMENT MEANS THAT YOU MAY SUBSTITUTE UP TO 50% OF PAID EXPERIENCE WITH RELATED EDUCATION AND TRAINING. Possession of a valid State of Ohio driver's license.

Ability to read and write and to understand and carry out verbal and written instructions. Ability to perform basic mathematics including percentages. Mechanical aptitude. Ability to perform a variety of laboring tasks involving lifting, carrying, stacking, digging, pushing, pulling, and other efforts requiring considerable physical strength and stamina. Ability to work outside in inclement weather. Ability to safely operate a motor vehicle. List of essential job functions available upon request.

Competitive Examination Process

The selection process will consist of a competitive examination including a written test and a performance test with credit for education and experience. A passing score must be achieved on the competitive examination in order to receive credit for education and experience. TEST WEIGHTS: Competitive Examination 70%, Education 20%, Experience 10%.

Candidates must meet the qualifications and requirements listed in the announcement at the time of examination and at the time of appointment.

RESIDENCY: Candidates who have been resident citizens within the corporate limits of the City of Akron for at least one year immediately prior to the examination and who continue to reside within the corporate limits of the City of Akron throughout the remainder of the selection process will have 5 points added to their passing grades.

VETERANS: A veteran of the Armed Forces of the United States, honorably discharged from active duty, desiring a bonus of 5 points added to his/her passing grade, must submit proof of discharge in the form of a DD-214 with application.

DRIVER'S LICENSE: An applicant having a valid driver's license from another state will be accepted conditionally provided that, if selected, an Ohio Driver's License must be obtained prior to appointment. Candidates having six or more points on their driving record at the time of appointment will be disqualified from further consideration.
