Metallurgical/Cut & Etch Tech 2nd Shift - Chattanooga, TN / Plant 1

Role Summary

Verify that the structural integrity of hardened steel materials and welded materials meet or exceed the customer specifications through cut & etch, pickling, microscopic measurement, tensile, destruct, bend and intrusion testing. Role is commonly referred to as Metallurgy (focus on steel) and/or Macro Weld Analysis / Cut & Etch (focus on welding).

Key Responsibilities

  • Adhere to Quality, Safety, and Environmental Policies.
  • Understand and follow all required ASTM standards.
  • Understanding and adherence to specific customer standards.
  • Micro-cut (wet saw) samples according to customer specifications.
  • Etch samples according to customer specifications.
  • Mount, grind and polish micro-samples to customer and ASTM specifications.
  • Tensile testing and bend (compression) analysis using Instron test equipment and Bluehill software.
  • Micro hardness measurement using Struers Durascan 80 equipment and software.
  • Surface hardness measurement using Rockwell tester.
  • Microstructure interpretation and measurement using Infinity 1 software.
  • Knowledge of chemical usage and safety, most notably sulfuric acid and nitric acid.
  • Create measurement reports and presentations in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Report to management level and Quality Engineers non-conforming material via written reports.
  • Maintain the gage calibration system for the Met Lab / Hot Stamp area using GageTrak Software.
  • Ensure that testing and measuring equipment is maintained and in proper calibration.
  • Participation in the Internal ISO 9001/IATF 16949 Audit schedule (applies only to certified ISO 9001/IATF 16949 internal auditors).
  • Participation and cooperation in answering questions and providing information for internal and external audits regarding or related to ISO 9001/IATF 16949, VDA 6.3, and customer standards.

Knowledge and Education
  • High school diploma or GED, AS/BS Degree similar to metallurgy or quality testing preferred.
  • Minimum 2 years quality experience, weld analysis experience, or CQT certification through ASQ.
  • Background in Metallurgy a plus
  • Production experience recommended
  • Background in automotive industry a plus.


Key Qualifications/Requirements
  • Knowledge of material testing procedures and interpretation of results (Tensile, Yield, Elongation, Macro hardness, Micro hardness, Microstructure, 3-Point Bend, Cut & Etch, etc).
  • Knowledge of quality tools/techniques (APQP, SPC, PFMEA, Control Plans, PPAP, IATF-16949, 3 path 5 why, 8D, CQI-9, etc).
  • Knowledge of customer material engineering standards and specifications
  • Knowledge of plant manufacturing processes.
