NATURE AND SCOPE OF WORK:'

To oversee all operations of the sports medicine program to meet the needs of student-athletes, coaches, and staff. This would include the rendering of emergency care, the development and implementation of injury prevention programs, and the assessment, management, treatment, rehabilitation, and recondition of student-athletes.

Major Responsibilities

Coverage: Provide athletic training services during weekdays, weeknights, and potential weekends according to a schedule set with the Athletic Director including -

All on-campus athletic contests

Away varsity football/hockey games

Non-game day on-campus practice coverage

All MIAA tournament contests as directed by the Athletic Director

Injury Tracking:

Maintain statistics and accurate records of injuries

Maintain seasonal injury tracking by sport and injury

Maintain annual concussion tracking and report findings to the appropriate state agency

Provide the coaches and athletic director with a list of athletes medically eligible to compete under district and state rules and regulations

Communication:

Communication with the parent/guardian of an injured athlete to give adequate directions and instructions for further treatment and evaluation of the injured athlete

Act as liaison between team physician, family physicians and specialists, the school district, athletes, and their parents

Maintain daily communications with the School Nurses on the status of student injuries, recoveries, and back-to-play protocols.

Informs coaches, athletes, and families of important aspects of the athlete's present condition, including concussion, wound care, first aid, and follow-up care

Inform parent, athletic director, and school nurse of any athlete in suspicion of a concussion

Treatment:

Provide care to injured athletes by Professional Practice Act guidelines

Provide for on-site recognition during games and practices, evaluation, and immediate treatment of illnesses and injuries - both acute and catastrophic. The Athletic Trainer will have sole discretion as to whether the athlete returns to play.

Facilitate and perform rehabilitation and reconditioning treatment programs by findings of evaluations and goals established by the injury assessment or by the treating physician.

Schedules athlete treatment and/or other intervention as necessary and established

Instruct athletes in therapeutic exercise, and strength and conditioning programs

Provide advice to athletes and coaching staff on proper exercise and strength training techniques, nutritional guidelines, and safe practice environments.

Advise, under the direction of the physician, when an athlete may return to participation following any release from medical restrictions.

Other Roles and Responsibilities:

Responsible for the maintenance and supervision of the training room, keeping it adequately supplied, equipped, and secured.

Maintains inventory of athletic training supplies, including medical supplies, and is responsible for the distribution of all required supplies, first aid kits, and water containers, to coaches.

Familiar with the nutritional requirements of athletes.

Comply with all required notifications and acknowledgements regarding the Anti-Hazing Law, under M.G.L. Ch. 269 S.17-19 for Student Groups, Teams, and Organizations.

Comply with all required training, student physical examination records, identification, and reporting responsibilities under 105 CMR 200.00 regulations of Head Injuries and Concussions in Extracurricular Athletic Activities.

Other duties, as assigned.
