Night and Weekend Editor

Military Times, a Sightline Media Group brand, is an independent voice for U.S. service members, military veterans and their families. We cover how operational, personnel and readiness decisions are made and what those mean for service members across the globe. Our readers are service members, veterans and their families, as well as decision-makers at the Pentagon, on Capitol Hill and around the world.

At Sightline, our journalists are the heart of the organization. We break stories, find indispensable scoops, write award-winning enterprise stories, review pitches with an eye toward our audience, encourage each other to pursue those stories of greatest import and impact, and edit each article to the highest standards.

We have an immediate opening for a full-time night and weekend editor to join our team.

This is a remote position that may work best from the hours of 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Eastern.

This job requires:
An interest in and understanding of the military and veterans issues or an aptitude to learn quickly.
Bringing in daily news stories from our syndication partners and helping to expand our existing partnerships with other news organizations.
Coordinating opinion pieces that may run across all publications: Military Times, Air Force Times, Army Times, Navy Times and Marine Corps Times.
Working with the Early Bird Brief podcast team to ensure information is fact-checked and succinct.
Overseeing email newsletters that go to our vast subscriber network
Staying on top of military data and trends that resonate with troops, veterans and their families.
Seeking out stories that go beyond press releases and public speeches.
Communicating closely with editors and reporters to ensure Military Times is covering all important topics.

Our ideal candidate has at least two years of relevant journalism experience and:
Dedication to objective journalism, both in the newsroom and in your public image, and a proven track record of working on balanced and fair news stories.
Strong knowledge of and adherence to Associated Press style.
Creativity and a contemporary approach to storytelling across digital and print platforms.

In the same way that we don't want our reporters to be stenographers, we expect our editors to do more than just edit for typos - though that's certainly required. Rather, we want you to look at a story and see what's missing, and then to help your colleagues chart a path to get it there. Each and every story that passes your desk should be held to the same exacting standard. When it comes to selecting stories to syndicate and flag for reporters to chase down, we want someone who considers what's next, looks past buzzwords, won't be easily led and thinks hard about the consequences of every decision. The story of the day might not be a good fit for our readers, while an overlooked story might be very consequential.

We sweat details. Our editors value accuracy, clarity and a good story.
