Job Description

BACKGROUND: Founded in 1933, the International Rescue Committee is a leading, non-sectarian, non-profit organization providing emergency relief, protection, rehabilitation assistance, resettlement services, and advocacy for refugees and victims of oppression or violent conflict.Domestically, our 26 offices across the U.S. ensure new arrivals have food, shelter, and clothing and work with refugees to help them gain self-sufficiency.

The RAI Interpretation program leads the development of interpretation and translation guidance for the Resettlement team grant programs and the client-facing staff. The program supports local offices in achieving compliance and programmatic objectives through the provision of appropriate interpretation and translation following the Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services (CLAS) and Accountability to Affected Populations (AAP) standards set forth by the Bureau of Population, Refugees, and Migration (PRM) and the Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR).

SCOPE OF INTERN WORK

With oversight from the Senior Program Officer, the RAI Interpretation Program Intern will be able to work on exciting projects, develop new skills, and network. This is a chance to gain hands-on experience, apply their knowledge, and grow professionally in a supportive and inclusive environment. The primary responsibility of the RAI Interpretation Program Intern is to aid the RAI Senior Program Officer for Interpretation and Translation in establishing standards and a long-lasting interpretation network. This will ensure the IRC staff can access top-notch interpretation and translation resources.

COMMITMENT: 5-6 months starting in September 2023, 15-25 hours per week minimum

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Assist the SPO with implementing tools and systems related to interpretation and translation.

Research and help organize existing interpretation-related materials, guides, and tools.

Assist the SPO with analyzing the current RAI Interpretation programming at the resettlement sites, and gain valuable insight into the field, including the following.

o Establishing contact points in offices that procure and manage staff interpreting needs.

o Determining the language assistance capacity of offices with an established Interpreter Services Program.

o Identifying sites that hope to establish interpretation programs.

o Creating data visualization of the analysis results and project management toolkit.

Provide general administrative support and contribute to special projects.

Assist with projects related to the overall goals of your RAI Interpretation department.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. The intern will gain professional experience and enhance their research, writing, and analysis skills.

2. The intern will deepen their understanding of best practices for planning and implementing data-driven, evidence-based programs.

3. The intern will gain experience with methods and technology used to disseminate learning.

4. The intern will further their program design and implementation skills.

REQUIREMENTS:

Undergraduate or graduate student focusing on Linguistics, Journalism, Communications, Data Science, or a related field preferred.

Strong oral communication skills, including the ability to effectively distill and present complex information in a concise, accessible way.

Excellent research, writing, and analysis skills.

Proficient in data visualization/dashboard building-Data visualization skills: quickly and effectively tell the data story, using visualization techniques to highlight notable points.

Experience with website maintenance (WordPress) or newsletter development is a plus (not required).

Master's degree coursework in monitoring and evaluation (M&E) or research methods is a plus (not required).

Experience with language access programming or communication technology a plus.

Ability to work as part of a team and independently.

This is an unpaid internship position. No financial compensation, including compensation for relocation, is available.
