Description

The Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, Prince George's County Department of Parks and Recreation is a nationally recognized and award-winning parks department. The Special Programs Division operates the Conservation Job Corps program to engage high school students and young adults in ecological restoration projects.

Crew members work on conservation and restoration projects in Prince George's County, including watershed cleanups, removal of invasive plants, and growing, planting, and caring for native trees, shrubs, and plants. Work projects take place in both indoor and outdoor settings, may involve exposure to inclement weather and other outdoor hazards, and may include scheduled weekend, evening, and holiday hours. Crew members have the opportunity to earn the Chesapeake Bay Landscape Professional-Associate certificate, an entry-level credential for careers in conservation landscaping and stormwater management practices that provides training about local ecosystems, natural resources, conservation practices, and careers in natural resources, outdoor recreation, and environmental education.
Examples of Important Duties

  • Participate in mandatory staff trainings in May and June;
  • Assist with planning and implementation of outdoor conservation and restoration projects in Prince George's County, including watershed cleanups, removal of exotic invasive plants, and planting of and care for native trees, shrubs, and plants;
  • Coordinate with program supervisor to manage 2 crew leaders each leading a crew of 5 youth in conservation and restoration projects, with particular attention to youth safety, team-building, and formal and informal training concerning local ecosystems, natural resources, conservation practices, and careers in natural resources and outdoor recreation;
  • Administer first aid and complete documentation of injuries and safety issues as needed;
  • Maintain records of employees' hours and work performance, document crew activities using photography and videography, and monitor the status of completed projects;
  • Provide informal and written evaluation of crew member performance throughout the program;
  • Prepare reports on crew activities and accomplishments as requested.
Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Age: Must be at least 21 years old
  • Education: High School diploma or equivalent and one (1) year of college or equivalent work experience.
  • Valid driver's license in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations. Driver's license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee's ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.

DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Education or experience in the field of park operations, recreation, education, forestry, social sciences, engineering or natural resources related field is preferred.
  • Previous work experience with youth is preferred.
  • Possession of current certification in CPR for adult/child and First-Aid is preferred.
  • Bilingual - Spanish is preferred, but not required.

Limited Benefits for Seasonal Employees

Health Insurance Plans
You are eligible for specific health insurance benefits if you worked, on average, 30 hours per week during your first 12 months of employment or from October 3rd to October 2nd each subsequent period following your first 12 months of employment. This equates to 1,560 hours over a 12-month period.

If and when you are eligible for benefits, you will receive notification directly from the Health & Benefits Office.

Eligible Employees Pay 35% of the health insurance plan premium and The Commission Pays 65%.
