Description

Do you love the game of soccer and want to help others enjoy the game too? Want to positively influence children as they learn the game, develop their skills, practice good sportsmanship, and have fun? You can get back in the game by refereeing and supervising youth soccer games (Grades K-8) in the City's You must be 16 years of age or older to apply.

As an official for the Youth Soccer Program, you will help participants focus on fundamentals of the game, develop their basic skills, and create a positive, engaging, and encouraging environment for boys and girls participating in the program. The program emphasizes team play and sportsmanship, so you will be responsible for supervising and refereeing games and ensuring all rules and regulations are adhered to and that the safety of all participants and spectators is protected. Our primary goal is to offer a safe and positive environment for youth to develop physical and social skills, self-confidence, and just have fun playing sports.

Games are held on Saturdays beginning on March 16, 2024; staff must also attend preliminary meetings to be held prior to the beginning of the season. Hours per week will vary based on operational needs, but will generally not exceed an average of 6 to 8 hours per week.

Starting hourly rate is negotiable within the range and will be offered at a level consistent with the experience and qualifications of the candidate. Direct deposit of paychecks is a condition of employment for all City of Gaithersburg employees.

Job Functions

What you will do with us:

  • Officiate and supervise soccer games for participating youth (Grades K-8).
  • Ensure players compete in a fair, safe, and encouraging environment.
  • Organize supplies and equipment; ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Inspect playing surface and equipment regularly to ensure compliance with event and safety regulations.
  • Maintain appropriate level of control, fairness, and consistency in all competitive situations.
  • Resolve participant conflicts with tact and diplomacy.
  • Keep proper records as necessary.
  • Provide excellent service, pursue continuous improvement, and exceed expectations.

Qualifications

What you will need to be considered:
  • Be at least 16 years of age or older.
  • Have demonstrated experience and knowledge with the game of soccer.
  • Prior experience officiating soccer games preferred.
  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Be responsible, dependable, and punctual, and have a high degree of maturity.
  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to make quick and sound decisions and to understand, carry out, and provide written and oral directions and instructions.
  • Be safety conscious and able to enforce safety rules and regulations.
  • Physical ability to lift/carry materials weighing up to 60 pounds and repeatedly and quickly traverse the field to monitor play.
  • CPR/AED and First Aid certification preferred (may be obtained through the City upon hire).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and to deal with children, parents, coaches, and other staff in a positive, reassuring, courteous, and professional manner.
  • Demonstrated commitment to providing a safe and fun atmosphere for participants, coaches, and spectators of the youth soccer program.
  • Or any acceptable equivalent combination of education, experience, and training that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
