As a member of the health care team, the Patient Companion ("Sitter") is responsible for providing a basic safe environment for a patient(s) under the direct supervision of the Registered Nurse. Assists patients with activities to promote a safe, comfortable environment that fosters the physiological and psychosocial well-being of the patient.Southern California Hospital at Culver City has been taking care of generations of Culver City and west LA residents. We are a full-service, acute care hospital with a 24/7 emergency department and nationally recognized patient safety. Now at 420 beds, SCH-CC is a general acute care hospital that utilizes many of the latest medical treatments and technologies. The hospital offers a wide range of inpatient and outpatient acute care services, including an orthopedic center, cardiovascular services, acute rehabilitation, sub-acute care, psychiatric care and chemical dependency programs. Additionally, SCH-CC operates a 24-hour emergency services center, which serves as a paramedic receiving station and is staffed by board-certified emergency physicians and nurse specialists.

EMPLOYMENT STANDARDS: Assesses patient environment to assure a safe environment for the patient. Assess the patient for sources of safety risk for the patient. Notifies Registered Nurse of relevant changes in the patient's condition and level of agitation or sedation. Receives and reports hand-off of care of the patient before leaving the area or upon returning to the patient. Shares input from patient and family with the RN caring for the patient. Willingly performs additional duties and responsibilities in different areas of the department on an as needed basis or as determined by management.| CARE OF THE PATIENT: Under the direction of the RN, follows the plan of care based on the initial assessment of the patient's physical, psychological and social needs. No direct patient care is provided. Provides diversional activities. Confers with the primary nurse on the patient response to plan of care. Maintains approved Infection Control practice by demonstrating proper hand hygiene procedures. Provides observation of patient care to adult and geriatric patients understanding the differences may require (e.g., assistance with ADLS).| PATIENT EDUCATION: Provides patient/family member with the specific knowledge and/or skills required to meet the patient's ongoing safety needs. Re-orients the patient to their environment keeping a calm composure during interactions.| ENVIRONMENT OF CARE: Complies with approved safety practices for the department/organization to minimize the potential for risk/injury to patients and personnel. Maintains a safe environment, such as moving trip and fall hazards, etc.| COMMUNICATION: Effectively communicates with the primary RN the condition of the patient or any changes noted in a timely manner, while sitting with patient. Actively engages in caring behaviors, taking conscious ownership for work and takes a proactive, deliberate, and thoughtful actions regarding work activities. Understanding of basic medical terminology
