THIS IS A TEMPORARY POSITION FOR THE ATHLETICS SUMMER PROGRAM

Summer Sports Instructor (for Football, Basketball, Track, Tennis, Golf, Volleyball or Lacrosse)

LOCATION, DATES, HOURS

PROGRAM START DATE (First Day Students in Session) : June 24th, 2024

PROGRAM END DATE (Last Day Students in Session) : August 2nd, 2024

EMPLOYEE START DATE : June 20th, 2024 (including professional development)

EMPLOYEE END DATE : August 6th, 2024

TRAINING DATES : June 20th and June 21st at McDaniel HS from 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

DUTY DAYS/HOURS : Monday - Friday; 8:00 AM - 4:00 PM

LOCATIONS : Roosevelt and McDaniel

CONTINGENCIES

All positions are contingent on enrollment of students. It is essential that applicants remain available. We will, however, make earlier commitments as definite positions become evident. All PPS job offers are contingent on the satisfactory completion of a background check, including fingerprinting and criminal records.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Vision:

To create an environment that historically underserved students in Portland Public Schools can flourish by providing culturally relevant curriculum and teaching practices, culturally specific staff (teachers, coaches, mentors), math related exposure education and culturally specific social emotional support.

Purpose:

The PIL Sports Academy is a coordinated effort between OTL, Athletics and SUN Schools customized to meet the individual math needs of historically underserved students in Portland Public Schools. The extended summer program offers students rigorous, relevant and accelerated math instruction, reinforced with character building, leadership development, math exposure educational trips and high expectations.

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Key points of the job description for a Summer Sports Instructor:

  • Directly responsible to the summer administrator. The summer sports instructor should carry out all duties and responsibilities that are asked of them within the rules and regulations of the district. The summer sports instructoris expected to follow the policy set by the administrator.
  • A sports instructorshould display a competitive spirit, possess emotional self-control, and set goals and standards for themselves and the team which they represent, and reflect the school and district philosophy of athletics.
  • A sports instructorshould enlist participants and create interest in the activity by whatever means are available.
  • The person designated as sports instructor should possess competencies that will enable the sports instructor to organize, instruct and prepare the athletes in the fundamentals of the game, to instructathletes to usethe fundamentals in the strategic manner, and to play by the rules set forth.
The Summer Sports Instructor will be responsible for the following:
  • Directly responsible to the summer administrator.
  • Responsible for the conduct, both on and off the playing surface, of all persons under his/her jurisdiction.
  • Cooperate with the faculty and parents to cultivate their friendship and loyalty.
  • Work within the rules and regulations as set forth by the state, Oregon School Activities Association, the district and the school.
  • Confer with athletic director to be certain that all competing athletes maintain their eligibility.
  • Be familiar with the Athletic Manual and regard to rules and regulations set forth by the state and district.
  • Maintain a daily log of your practices, teaching skill progressions, to whom and reviews. Document all safety procedures (water breaks)
All summer sports instructorswill need to complete the following prior to employment:
  • NFHS/ASEP Certification
  • First Aid Card (CPR and AED trained)
  • District Fingerprinting/Criminal check
  • Completion of OSAA Concussion Test
  • Completion of ODE Steroid Test
  • Completion of OSAA Heat Test
  • Completion of Portland Public School District paperwork and trainings.

  • Pay Rate: $31.08per hour
