Football Athletic Training Student Aide

Position Summary:

The Student Aide is responsible for first responder needs of the student-athletes of the designated sport(s).This position will work closely with athletic training staff, physicians and medical facilities concerning the student-athletes' health and wellness.

Duties of all Positions at Kansas Athletics:

  1. Adhere to University, Big 12 Conference, Kansas Athletics, and NCAA policies and procedures;
  2. Maintain knowledge of departmental activities, sports schedules, and procedures;
  3. Foster cooperative working relationships with fellow staff members within the Department;
  4. Support the athletics department goals and philosophies as described by the Director of Athletics and work to achieve and uphold the department's mission statement and core values;
  5. Maintain a positive attitude toward performing job duties and in working with other staff members;
  6. Exhibit professional decorum at all times while representing Kansas Athletics;
  7. Maintain the confidentiality of all information obtained while an employee of Kansas Athletics including all private, confidential, or sensitive information and ensuring compliance with FERPA, HIPAA, and other applicable regulations.


Duties and Responsibilities of this Position:

  1. Assist with the sport and supervision of student-athletes as assigned;
  2. Assist with pre-practice set up and post practice breakdown (medical supplies and equipment);
  3. Assist with the overall daily upkeep, organization, and maintenance of the Sports Medicine facility and Sports Medicine equipment being used
  4. Adhere to the rules and regulations of the Student Aide handbook, maintaining a professional environment;
  5. Communicate effectively with athletic training staff regarding the need of athletes while in practice or competition;
  6. Have the ability to travel with the assigned sport if needed;
  7. Perform other duties as assigned.


Expectations of First Responders:

  1. Student Aides will follow the protocol outlined below and will be limited to the following responsibilities in the event of an injury:
    1. The first Student Aide to arrive at and/or recognize an emergency or injury is to identify the need for initial medical assistance
    2. Initiate an immediate radio signal to a Certified Athletic Trainer for an evaluation of the injury/emergency
    3. Stay with the athlete until the Certified Athletic Trainer arrives, assisting the ATC with the necessary medical supplies if needed
  2. The Student Aide is NOT permitted to perform evaluation techniques, apply any therapeutic treatment modalities, distribute medication, or apply any kind of therapeutic exercise protocol. The Student Aide will be required to read, understand, and comply with this policy prior to participation in any clinical and/or field experience.


Required Qualifications:

  • Full-time student at the University of Kansas;
  • Ability to maintain confidential information;
  • Ability to work irregular schedule including evenings and weekends.


Preferred Qualifications:

  • Eligibility for Federal Work Study;
  • Enrollment in Exercise Science program.
