Work Location: Work Location: 100% Remote from the AIA Approved States : DC, MD, VA, AR, DE, FL, GA*, ID, IL, IA, KS, KY, ME, MI, MN, MT, NH, NM, NY, NC, OK, PA, SD, TN, UT, VT, WI, WY. This position will periodically be required to be on-site at the AIA Headquarters in Washington, D.C.

Job Summary

Reporting to the Sr. Director, Media Strategy. The primary responsibility of the Sr. Manager is to assist with positioning the AIA as a primary source to members of the media, bloggers, and influencers for information on all subjects relating to architecture, design, building and construction. Duties include developing key messages and story ideas for communication campaigns and pitching to editorial media targets in support of the overall public awareness goals of the AIA.

Job Duties:

  • Research media targets and pitch relevant story ideas on a regular basis to generate coverage of AIA key initiatives and programs. Primaryfocus is to carry out AIA's strategic priorities and raise visibility of the association and profession among traditional media, trade press, industry bloggers, members of Capitol Hill and the general public.
  • Collaborates with the association's departments and member communities to identify and support exposure of AIA programs and initiatives that advance the architecture profession. Develops communication plans for key initiatives.


  • Works with the Sr. Director of Media Strategy to help schedule and coordinate in-person media briefings for AIA executives and subject matter experts, especially AIA's CEO and President. Works with AIA departments and management to identify appropriate subject matter experts to discuss AIA initiatives and prepares spokespeople for interviews.
  • Develops messages, story ideas and content for media releases, talking points, pitches and thought leadership strategies based on AIA initiatives, campaigns and trending news. .
  • Writes media releases, talking points, , op-eds, letters to the editor, and web page updates.


  • Provides prompt responses to media inquiries. Monitors news coverage to identify misinformation. Proactively works to correct misinformation.
  • Identifies and develops media relationships using social media platforms, including connecting with members, organizations, members of Capitol Hill, reporters and other relevant audiences.


  • Assists with identifying and developing AIA media sources and spokespeople for various topic areas. Connects sources with reporters.


  • Works to communicate and develop cross-promotion of AIA programs, resources, and activities.
  • Monitors daily news coverage and social media related to the architecture profession and association to identify opportunities to include AIA's message into current news cycles and social platforms. Compiles articles relating to the profession, along with top-tier AIA national coverage into a daily media scan that is distributed internally.

Qualifications
  • Working knowledge of media operations, journalism, editing, and writing for print, broadcast, and electronic publications. Strong understanding of social media messaging and platforms.


  • Ability to identify newsworthy story ideas related to the architecture profession.
  • Skill in prioritizing tasks and deadlines to achieve team goals and to field incoming requests from reporters with urgency.
  • Proficient verbal and written communications skills.
  • Ability to message and write for various channels including, talking points, websites, and media releases.
  • Effectively works with members, the public, and news media to provide outstanding customer service.
  • Proficient attention to detail and meeting deadlines.
  • Good interpersonal skills for effective relationships with department staff and architect-expert sources.
  • Strong understanding of social media platforms.


Existing relationships with DC media, national media and broadcast media preferred.

Bachelor's degree, preferably in journalism or communications with five to seven years of directly related experience in media relations, public relations, or marketing consumer products and services with an emphasis on media outreach to major news organizations preferred.
