Senior Level Architectural Designer

Job Details

Shook Kelley, established in 1992, is a strategy and design firm with a well established reputation for creating highly innovative projects in the retail, restaurant, grocery store and mixed-use development industries. Our unorthodox process entails a unique blend of social science research, strategic planning, brand strategy, environmental graphic design, merchandising and, of course, architectural and interior design expertise.

We are a coalition of passionate thinkers that use strategy and design to challenge conventional wisdom and advance some of the world's greatest and most recognized brands. Our zeal and rebellious nature is a byproduct of our unwavering focus; we help entities that rely on physical places and spaces to reach their greater potential through meaningful human experiences.

We accomplish this by using an atypical process involving a unique network of disciplines-including business, social science and a broad array of design disciplines-to radically reconsider the ways in which the great value exchange can happen between people and product providers.

We are looking for a senior level Architectural Designer with at least 15 years experience working as a project design leader. Ideal candidate will have strong capabilities in solving problems, conceptualizing, drawing, presentations and leading both clients and teams towards innovative solutions with a collaborative process.

Our ideal Architectural Designer candidate has a gift for fostering creativity and an ability to imagine new possibilities in all industries.

If you can flex your creativity across varying project types and industries, collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment and inspire project teams, we want to hear from you.

That means you can: productively lead a project team to meet strategic/business goals, navigate their idiosyncrasies, give effective direction, bring the best out of their work, humbly apply your own creative vision, collaborate respectfully with leaders in different disciplines and preserve a focus on the project's strategic goals. The last point for you to consider; we hold business strategy at the core of what we do. That is why brands like Harley-Davidson, Whole Foods, Gelson's and Downtown Santa Monica trust our strategic advice, recommendations and design services.

The best fit for this role is someone that understands and appreciates the value that conscious businesses bring to society and, therefore, is passionate about using strategy and design to propel organizations towards higher profits and enduring brand equity.

Responsibilities:

  • Leads conceptual architecture work on projects, in collaboration with other firm/project leaders
  • Works directly with office leadership to ensure best practices used and comprehensive design goals are met
  • Defines program requirements and establishes design parameters based on client requirements and working with discipline leads and project manager
  • Manages architecture/interior design team members during the conception, development and implementation of architecture projects to ensure clarity and quality of concept is maintained through all levels of detail
  • Leads the orchestration and strategy of design presentations with other relevant project discipline leads
  • Owns architecture project budgets and schedules
  • Continually enhances the shrewdness, aptness and appeal of our design work
  • Effectively communicates with staff to manage their expectations, foster their personal development and lead them as the influential "voice" of design
  • Keeps a pulse on market trends and research as it relates to retail and/or restaurant design, and executes projects with industry/marketplace awareness
Requirements:
  • Proven experience effectively managing architecture and interiors projects
  • 15+ years of related retail design experience, with other industries as an added bonus
  • Exceptional verbal communication, presentation and project/client management skills
  • Able to liaise and coach Clients through Shook Kelley's unique design process and ensure decision making by the Clients supports the brand and brings value to the project
  • Second-nature ability to brief and manage third party consultants and contractors
  • Remarkable track record for managing personal and project schedules on time and on budget
  • B.A. in Architecture
  • Adobe Suite and Sketch-Up skills required
  • Proficiency with ArchiCAD and Mac-based systems
