Job Details

Primary Responsibility

Ensuring the safety of patrons is the lifeguard's primary responsibility.

Secondary Responsibilities

Additional responsibilities that each Tupelo Parks & Recreation lifeguard must uphold are:

* The Aquatic Program is a part of Tupelo Parks & Recreation Department. Each employee is responsible for promoting and serving as an ambassador for the Department and its mission.

* The diversity of our programs sometimes requires lifeguards to assist in tasks that are not limited to lifeguarding. As a member of our team we expect you to complete these tasks positively and efficiently.

JOB REQUIREMENTS:

Certifications

During employment as an Aquatic Center Lifeguard, it will be the responsibility of each guard to maintain current certification and proficiency in the corresponding skills.

* American Red Cross Lifeguarding Today (Valid 2 years)

* CPR for the Professional Rescuer/AED Essentials (Valid 2 year)

Re-certification classes are offered on an as-needed basis. Information will be posted in the lifeguard office prior to classes. If you do not attend a re-certification class, you are responsible for updating the certification in order to be eligible to continue employment.

Safety

Accident prevention is achieved through knowledge, understanding and assertive enforcement of all rules, policies and procedures. Taking action before an incident happens can eliminate problems before they surface. If an accident does arise, proper rescues/first aid and reports must be completed to the highest standard.

Public Relations

Communicate between lifeguards, patrons, and other staff in a calm, polite, and rational manner. Providing for patron safety starts by educating them as to rules and policies. Be assertive, ask questions and offer assistance.

Fitness Standards

Lifeguards are expected to maintain a fitness level that allows for efficient and effective water rescues and provides for the performance of skills. The following will be required at all in-services or upon request. Failure to complete may result in suspension or termination.

Swimming Skill Standards

Performance parameters

300 yd swim

Deck start is not permitted, front crawl and breaststroke

25 yd. sprint w/ rescue tube

Stride jump is required.

25 yd. sprint retrieve 10 lb. brick,

25 yd. return to start w/ rescue tube and brick

Stride jump is required, appropriate rescue technique must be demonstrated - i.e. whip/rotary kick on back.

Tread water with 10 lb. brick for 1:30

Both hands must be on brick and out of water

Quick surface dive for 10 lb. brick in 12'4" of water and return to surface

In the water start, approach stroke for minimum of 10 yards and then diving. Goggles are NOT permitted. Time stops when brick breaks the surface of the water.
