General Purpose

This position is responsible for performing skilled work in the maintenance, and repair of airport grounds, buildings, taxiways, runways, roadway system, and related facilities.

Essential Job Functions

  • Clean grounds, roadways, runways, taxiways and ramp areas of trash and debris.
  • Repair and maintain airport roads, runways, taxiways painted surface markings, patch holes, lay asphalt and concrete and regrade soil for proper drainage.
  • Maintain grass areas landside and on and off airfield including but not limited to, mowing along taxiways and runways, maintaining landscaping shrubs, flowerbeds, and plantings around airport grounds and buildings.
  • Remove trash and debris from all grounds, parking garages, and buildings as required.
  • Assist mechanics with cleaning and maintaining vehicles and equipment.
  • Communicates with FAA Air Traffic Control for clearance onto movement areas.
  • Maintain signage and pavement markings on roadway system, airfield runway and taxiway system and parking garage; line striping, work with templates and fabrication of signs.
  • Assist airport electricians as needed with airfield lighting system and electrical construction or renovation to airport structures.
  • Perform various maintenance and repair in terminal building and other facilities on airport property, including but not limited to painting, sealing, carpentry, basic plumbing, and wood working, etc.
  • Perform related work as required.
  • Act as "Ambassador" for the City, carrying out work and interacting with co-workers and the public in a respectful, professional manner.
  • Carry out work in the field, and interact with the public in courteous and respectful manner, presenting self and City in a positive manner.
  • Position may require the operation of City vehicles and/or personal vehicles in order to conduct City business.

Qualifications/Basic Job Requirements

  • Ability to actively support City diversity, equity, and cultural competency efforts within stated job responsibilities and work effectively across diverse cultures and constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion as evidenced by ongoing trainings and professional development.
  • High School diploma or equivalent and two to four years of experience in the construction trades, or related skill trades, with a background in either carpentry, electrical and/or plumbing, Preferred.
  • Must be able to pass a 10 year background check
  • Ability to acquire knowledge of Federal Aviation Airport Traffic Control procedures
  • Ability to effectively communicate with Air Traffic control and other maintenance vehicle operators while performing other duties.
  • Ability to maintain effective working relationships with others in a team environment.
  • Working knowledge of and skill in using small tools and equipment.
  • Employee must not pose a direct threat to the health or safety of himself/herself or others
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Driver's license.
  • Ability to work in inclement weather.
  • Must learn and follow VOSHA safety rules and regulations
  • Must be a flexible team player that takes direction well, is safety conscious, customer-oriented, and willing and able to learn to operate all equipment and perform all tasks as assigned.
  • Ability to maintain professional appearance while engaging in field work, by refraining from any use of profanity, inappropriate language, or inappropriate behavior required.
  • Regular attendance is necessary and is essential to meeting the expectations of the job functions.
  • Ability to understand and comply with City standards, safety rules and personnel policies.
  • Ability to obtain a valid driver's license within 45 days of hire and the continued maintenance of a valid driver's license. A valid driver's license shall be defined as a current state of residence-issued license to operate a motor vehicle on public roadways. Position also requires the ability to be covered under the City's vehicle insurance policy prior to operation of any City vehicles or non-City vehicles for City business
