POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Chief Financial and Operating Officer (CFOO), this position leads the Finance and Accounting team with responsibility for all day-to-day functional activities including but not limited to the accuracy of accounts payable, accounts receivable, financial reporting and analysis, grants administration, organizational compliance with internal controls, and provides critical support on budgeting and financial forecasting. This position also leads the annual GAAP audits, IRS Form 990, and other tax filings. Working closely with the CFOO and other departmental leaders, the Senior Director, Finance is a mentor, trouble-shooter, and service provider in finance and accounting procedure, process improvement, and budget management.

Theposition is an Arlington, VA based, flexible hybrid working role.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Creates a strategy for and oversees execution of the day-to-day accounting functions including payables, receivables, bank reconciliations, general ledger entries, audit schedules, etc., ensuring compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Proposes and monitors internal control policies to safeguard the Association's assets.
  • Creates the strategy for and oversees execution of the annual audit process and tax return preparation/filing activities.
  • Creates the strategy for and oversees preparation of draft monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports including financial data analysis and draft notes to assist the CFOO in presentation to CEO, the Finance Committee, and the Board.
  • Prepares, distributes, and clearly communicates relevant commentary on monthly financial reports to Department heads, monitoring progress to and changes from budgets.
  • Partners with the CFOO, the Executive Team, and other department leaders in executing a strategy for preparation of the annual budgeting and planning process.
  • Supports the CFOO in preparations for and presentations to Board's Audit and Finance committees.
  • Leads all project and grant accounting processes, ensuring that expenditures are consistently aligned with grant and program budgets throughout the grant/fund period; prepares financial reporting materials for government, corporate, and foundation grants.
  • Leads other Finance and Accounting staff by leveraging each person's strengths to ensure each can contribute to organizational success at their highest level.
  • Miscellaneous other projects and activities as directed by the CFOO.
QUALIFICATIONS OR SKILLS REQUIRED
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance field is required, CPA certification a plus.
  • 7-10 years of progressively responsible accounting experience (Nonprofit experience preferred)
  • People manager experience required.
  • Experience in managing reporting, budget development, and budget to actual analysis, general ledger, accounting for investments, and annual GAAP audit are also preferred.
  • Expertise in Excel based report writing, Sage Intacct Accounting, Bill.com Payables all a plus.
  • Flexible, collaborative, and proactive; positively influencing both strategic and tactical goals.
  • A problem-solving mindset, with a record of accomplishment of process improvement.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including complex accounting standards, in non-technical terms to senior management and others.
  • Self-starter, good problem solver, results oriented.
