DISTRICT NURSE BASIC FUNCTION: The District Nurse will strengthen and facilitate the educational process by protecting the health status of children and by identification and assistance in the removal or modification of health related barriers to learning in individual children. This is to be implemented through the Health Services Program under the direction of the Director of Student Services. REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES: To assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of pupils. E Conduct immunization programs and assure that every pupils' immunization status is in compliance with the law, including parental or guardian consent and good health practice. E Assess and evaluate the health and developmental status of pupils to identify specific physical disorders and other factors relating to the learning process, communicate with the primary care provider, and contribute significant information in order to modify the pupils' educational plans. E Responsible for CHDP scheduling and follow-up. Responsible for carrying out mandated vision, hearing and scoliosis screening as outlined in the state guidelines. E Completes follow-up procedures for vision, hearing and scoliosis rechecks and referrals after the initial screening. E May teach First Aid classes and/or provide for a qualified instructor. Available for emergency situations, immediate physical problems of child abuse indications. E Assists in identification of safety and health hazards on school sites. Interpret the health and developmental assessment to parents, teachers, administrators and psychologists. E Design and implement a health maintenance plan to meet the individual health needs of the students, incorporating plans directed by a physician. E Assisting children and youth, parents, and school personnel in identifying and utilizing appropriate and mutually acceptable private and community health delivery services for professional care and remediation of defects. E Counseling with parents, pupils and school staff regarding health related attendance problems. E Helping parents, school personnel and students understand and adjust to physical, mental and social limitations. E Assist parents and students to solve financial, transportation, and other barriers to needed health services. E Maintain communication with parents and all involved community practitioners and agencies to promote needed treatment and secure reports of findings pertinent to educational planning. E Interpret medical and nursing findings appropriate to the student's individual educational plan and make recommendations to professional personnel directly involved. E Perform other related duties as assigned. EDUCATION AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Possession of, or ability to obtain, a School Nurse Services Credential (minimum requirement: BA degree or higher degree from a regionally accredited college or university) Possession of a valid Registered Nurse license issued by the State of California. Possession of a valid California Drivers License and private vehicle. Current CPR and First Aid card. WORKING CONDITIONS: ENVIRONMENT: School environment PHYSICAL ABILITIES: Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations. Seeing to read and review student case files and health records Sitting for extended periods of time.
