General Summary of PositionPrepares surgical trays and supplies in a safe and cost effective way utilizing established policy and procedures under the direction of the Supervisor/Manager. Provides assistance in maintaining sectional areas, equipment, and supplies.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists in processing contaminated instruments, supplies and equipment returned to decont area utilizing Universal protocol. Manually cleans the power tools, scopes and lenses and other delicate instruments. Assists in prioritizing trays that need to be turnover with appropriate communication with the team leader and/or designee. Receives/processes loaner trays following established standard procedure. Assists in maintaining inventory supplies in Decont area. Maintains clean and orderly area at all times within shift. Assists in performing the leak test on all flexible endoscopes prior to cleaning and disinfecting according to established procedure. Assists in routine cleaning of washers/decontaminators regularly as scheduled daily, by shift, weekly, biweekly or monthly. Utilizes appropriate protective attire, transport system and proper body mechanics.
  • Assists in the proper management of supplies inventory. Ensures all supplies are maintained according to established PAR level. Recommends adjusting PAR if needed. Reports all stock out including outside order supplies. Maintains proper inventory records of supply items. Completes necessary issue and return transactions. Ensures that stock items are rotated to make certain that the oldest items are used first.
  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Disassembles and cleans equipment such as suction machines, IV poles and monitors, and pumps using approved disinfectants, detergents, soaps and cleaners (if applicable). Reassembles equipment after cleaning and operates to test for proper functioning. Reports damaged or broken equipment to the Supervisor and/or Clinical Engineering department for pick up/for repair. Stores or transports area or department. Cleans, inspects, attaches label and cover to all equipment prior to storage or distribution.
  • Dispenses products requested for sterile and non-sterile equipment and supplies. Assigns priority to emergency requests and issues them to the requesting department according to department established procedure. Scans all items/products as appropriate prior to issuing to the department. Enforces/completes the SPD forms for documentation or tracking purposes.
  • Maintains a clean and organized work areas and equipment at all times. Follow the routine schedules for cleaning and maintaining the equipment on regular basis as recommended by the manufacturer. Maintains a safe work environment by following the standards of cleaning and applying good aseptic techniques.
  • Maintains and cleans the shelves and work areas at end of each shift. Applies aseptic techniques in daily work assignments. Performs general cleaning of the department surface areas, racks, shelves, all storage areas. Assists in the weekly scheduled cleaning of the shelves or as often as needed.
  • Makes rounds to collect medical equipment from all patient care units/floors. Picks up dirty equipment at least once every shift. Communicates to the appropriate Unit Manager of any problem. Ensures all equipment are collected, cleaned, and stored according to established protocol.
  • Participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.


  • Minimum Qualifications
    Education
    • High School Diploma or GEDrequiredor
    • equivalent. required


    Experience
    • Less than 1 year 6 months related experience required


    Licenses and Certifications
    • CRCST - Certified and Registered Central Service Technician CRCST (Certified Registered Central Service Technician) certificationpreferred


    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
    • Strong customer service skills.
    • Basic knowledge of infection control and medical and surgical terminology.
    • Basic computer skills.
    • Verbal and written communication skills.
