Summary:
Reporting to the Supervisor of Central Plant, the Central Plant Mechanic performs a variety of skilled and semi-skilled mechanical duties associated with the maintenance and operations of the Central Utilities Plant main utility distribution systems; and makes immediate decisions and repairs required in emergency situations.

Job Description:

  • Monitors boiler operation.
  • Completes boiler equipment logs as required for the duration of assigned shift; and works other shifts.
  • Performs regular routine duties of the Central Utility Plant.
  • Repairs equipment on shift as required to maintain efficient operations.
  • Contacts supervisor, as directed, for assistance with emergencies which occur after normal duty hours.
  • Keeps equipment, work areas and plants clean at all times including mopping and sweeping floors on each duty shift.
  • Responds to emergency calls, which includes HVAC, plumbing and electrical services.
  • Responsible for preventative maintenance work orders.
  • Keeps tools, equipment and supplies in order; paints equipment, as necessary.
  • Works in close spaces such as on the inside of boilers, chillers, tunnels, tanks and manholes.
  • Observes all safety regulations and practices.
  • Shows a genuine commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in the workplace; and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
  • Serves as a mandatory Title IX reporter; and takes annual Title IX training as part of the compliance effort.
  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.


SPECIFICATIONS:

Required Minimum Qualifications(When the candidate's resume meets these qualifications, it will be screened in.)
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • A minimum of five years of experience in central utility plant operations.


Preferred Qualifications (While not required, it is an advantage for what the position needs.)
  • General maintenance experience.
  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (Qualities that will help the incumbent be more successful in the position.)
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the JCI Building Automation System Metasys (BAS).
  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.
  • Demonstrated commitment to valuing diversity and contributing to an inclusive working and learning environment.


Other Important Information:
  • The incumbent must obtain Sixth Class Steam Engineer license within two years of hire and Third Class Steam Engineer license within five years of hire.
  • The incumbent must have a valid driver's permit at all times.
  • The incumbent must be able to lift at least 50 pounds.
  • The incumbent must be able to work from ladders or scaffolding.
  • If the incumbent has no knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 1+ within two years of employment. If the incumbent is hired with some knowledge of American Sign Language, the incumbent is expected to achieve an ASLPI score of 2 within two years of employment. Failure to meet the requirement may lead to termination. The supervisor must ensure that the incumbent receives the necessary support to meet this goal.
  • All employees are expected to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. They also will be required to submit their vaccination record prior to entering campus or by 45 days of employment, whichever is earlier. If they cannot be fully vaccinated, they may apply for a medical or religious exemption.
  • The successful candidate must have valid authorization to work in the United States.
  • The successful candidate will undergo a background check that must be cleared prior to working at Gallaudet University.
