POSITION SUMMARY:

Responsible for teaching - coordinating the nurse aide program and providing quality services that are supportive of the department's mission to serve its customers. Responsibilities include providing a syllabus or outline to each nurse aide student, designing and implementing teaching strategies that meet course objectives or outcomes, and evaluating student achievement and progress.

SUPPORT RELATIONSHIPS:

Works cooperatively with staff members to develop and implement effective educational programs and to deliver appropriate services to students.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

The statements below are intended to describe the general nature and scope of work being performed by this position. This is not a complete listing of all responsibilities, duties, and/or skills required. Other duties may be assigned.

  • Abide by the policies and procedures of the Department of Adult and Community Education, the Nurse Adie Program and respective clinical institutions;
  • Contribute to the development of the program's philosophy, objectives, conceptual framework, curriculum and policies and assure fulfillment of standards of the Ohio Board of Health and other regulatory agencies;
  • Demonstrate competency in using teaching resources;
  • Design students' clinical and laboratory experiences and assignments to achieve stated clinical objectives within the course framework;
  • Clearly communicate course and clinical objectives, plus evaluation methods and tools to the students, and clinical and teaching staff, as applicable;
  • Review quizzes/tests with student in order to improve/verify student learning;
  • Communicate and collaborate with staff and management at respective clinical facilities to assure that policies and procedures are followed and that student needs and assignments are clear for effective patient care and education;
  • Provide for student orientation to the assigned clinical facility, including orientation to physical environment, staff and facility policies and procedures;
  • Supervise students in the clinical area, maintain safe practice and abide by all established policies and procedures and remain available to students at all times during their clinical experience;
  • Plan and implement conferences in the clinical area concurrent with unit experience, clinical learning objectives and individual student needs;
  • Develop methods of student evaluation including written tests and other assignments that are based on course and clinical objectives;
  • Maintain accurate, complete and timely records of student performance for tests, written assignments, clinical progress and other measures of student progress as identified in the course syllabus;
  • Maintain attendance records for students in the course and/or clinical area;
  • Counsel students regarding competencies, learning, professionalism, grades and progress and assist students to develop improvement plans as indicated;
  • Provide extra instruction and tutoring as available upon request and refer to other support resources as needed;
  • Assume responsibility for placement/retention;
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS/LICENSURE:
  • Experience for at least two years in the practice of nursing as a licensed registered nurse, at least one of which shall be in the provision of long-term care facility services.
  • Experience in evaluating, in a long-term care setting, the clinical skills of individuals providing care is considered experience in caring for the elderly or chronically ill.
  • Successfully completed an approved Ohio Train the Trainer (TTT) program
  • Current, valid licensure as a registered nurse in Ohio.
  • Ohio Department of Education - Adult Education Permit (Health Occupations).
  • Within the previous three years, provided at least one year of direct supervision of nurse aides in a long-term care facility as a registered nurse.
NOTE: Primary instructor - RN - Two years of experience caring for the elderly or chronically ill of any age.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Evidence of competent skills in the area being taught.
  • Available to work during times when customers need services including evenings.
  • Previous teaching experience.
  • Expert communication/writing skills.
  • Ability to work with a variety of programs and staff.
