OPPORTUNITY

The Black Student Success Advisor (BSSA) will work under the leadership of the Black Student Achievement Program Manager to provide a robust program of cohort support for Black scholars in order to prepare them for college, leadership and life. The BSSA will teach an advisory class, focused on amplifying cultural identity and awareness and ready to learn skills necessary for success in high school and beyond. They will also provide ongoing case management to scholars focused on improvement in the areas of attendance, behavior, and course grades (GPA). Additionally, the BSSA will develop strong stakeholder relationships with school staff and parents, acting as the primary support for scholars in their cohort.

> The outcomes of the program will be measured by:

> Cohort GPAs at 2.5+ by the end of their 11th grade year

> Participation in dual enrollment courses

> AP participation

> Applying and enrolling in a best match college or university

This is a Central Office position which will require travel between the assigned school and the home office. The Black Student Success Advisor works year-round and is a grant-funded position ending on October 15, 2026.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

Direct Support to Students

> Prepare for and teach an advisory class to cohort of African American students, using curriculum provided

> Provide case management cohort of students to improve attendance, grades, behavioral outcomes

> Using data to coordinate interventions and supports for individual students (includes programming during the school year and during summer)

> Lead College for Certain Initiatives targeted specifically for African American Students, including but not limited to: Organizing HBCU College Tours and Developing a Summer Induction program for incoming African American 9th graders and their families

Stakeholder Partnerships

> Collaboration and communication with families, including home visits as needed

> Develop and facilitate parent workshops

> Collaborate with school leadership teams, teachers and support staff

> Establish relationships with external community partners to support students in cohort

> Coordinate with feeder middle schools to support with outreach and communication with 8th grade students and families

Ongoing Development and Growth

> Attend and participate in all team meetings and participate in weekly one-on-one meetings with manager

> Attend ongoing professional development opportunities, focused on assessing the impact of the program and responding to data

Organizational Support

> Support with programming and support for all African American students at GDPSC

> Participate in other events aimed at promoting or developing Green Dot and its schools

> Perform other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS

As an ideal candidate, you:

> have a bachelor's degree in school counseling, education, or related field (required)

> have a valid CA PPS or teaching credential (preferred)

> have at least three years of experience working in education or youth-services

> possess knowledge of strategies that support academic, social, and collegiate excellence for Black scholars and amplify their cultural capital in high school and beyond

> are a self-starter who can work independently but is willing to ask clarifying questions and proactively seek support when needed

> are able to translate programmatic vision into tangible results for Black scholars

Strong analytical skills with an ability to use data to drive programmatic decision-making

> possess excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to build and maintain strong positive relationships with scholars, families, school staff, partners as well as Central Office staff members

> have excellent communication skills with an ability to write and speak clearly and effectively

> are detail-oriented with impeccable organizational skills which allow for a high-level of execution and follow through, including an ability to track complex tasks and see them through to completion

> can demonstrate a deep commitment to continuous improvement including an openness to coaching from managers and other team members and a drive to learn and grow.

> have a desire to work on a team which values a passion for excellence, personal responsibility and accountability, is willing to go above and beyond to pursue results for scholars, yet is flexible and meets stakeholders where they are at

> are fluent in MS Office Word/Docs, Excel/Sheets, PowerPoint/Slides, and Outlook

> are dependable, humble, have a sense of humor and a rock-solid commitment to Green Dot's mission and the communities we serve

> will need to pass a TB test and background check at time of offer

> will need to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (submission of proof of vaccination will be required)

COMPENSATION

The starting salary for this position is $66,560 - $72,500, based on education and experience. The Black Student Success Advisor is a grant-funded position ending on October 15, 2026.

In addition, if hired by June 30, 2024, this position qualifies for a one-time $2,500 signing bonus, paid in two installments after months 6 and 12 of employment (subject to change).
