Job Overview

The Roofer / Sheet Metal Mechanic provides a direct service to the department to ensure a comfortable, safe and clean environment in which the University can live, learn and work.

They maintain and repair all types of roofs as part of the services provided to the University community to maintain university buildings in work that includes but is not limited to:

+ Maintain and repair of slate, tin, copper, hot tar, rubber and shingle roofs - as well as gutters, downspouts, and sheet metal work

+ Lay out and fabricate of duct lines, drip pans, metal louvers, etc. from flat sheet metal

+ Fabricate and install items made of special metals such as ornaments, murals and cornice work

+ Perform journey-level maintenance and repairs in accordance with industry/trade practices

+ Perform assignments in response to requests for service, scheduled preventive maintenance inspections, and unscheduled or special projects

+ Use all standard tools, equipment, materials and supplies of the trade

+ Observe all safety rules, regulations and precautions in performing duties

+ Operate various high reach machines

Work Interactions and Work Mode Designation

The Roofer / Sheet Metal Mechanic reports directly to the Building and Structures Supervisor, along with one other roofer/sheet metal worker, three locksmiths, three carpenters, one mason, and one trades helper.

As well, they work cooperatively and collaboratively with tradesmen of other areas within the department to complete assigned tasks as necessary, assuring that work can be completed on time and within specified guidelines.

Working on campus facilities, the also interact with other members of Planning and Facilities Management and with university faculty, staff and students.

Requirements and Qualifications

+ High school diploma or certified equivalency

+ Completion of apprenticeship or equivalent training in the roofing trade

+ 5 years of experience working with residential and commercial roofing systems, to include slate roofing

+ Skilled in fabricating and installing all types of sheet metal, to include duct work, metal louvers, drip pans, guttering and down spouts

+ General knowledge of soldering and welding

+ A valid driver's license from the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia

Preferred qualifications

+ Basic computer literacy

+ Working knowledge of Windows 95
