SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Wellness Counselor position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana. It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Wellness Counselor provides free and confidential, short-term counseling services to students currently enrolled in Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA) who may be dealing with personal issues that may negatively impact their academic success, interpersonal relationships, and health. The services provided are aimed at furthering the emotional health and well-being of students ultimately providing successful academic outcomes. The Counselor will provide appropriate referral services for students with mental health needs beyond SUSLA's counseling scope of care followed by brief case management services to ensure continuity of care. The incumbent serves as part of the academic intervention team to promote academic success, leadership development, equity and inclusion, retention, and enrollment management. The Wellness Counselor will coordinate and facilitate counseling and skill-building groups for students and provide psycho-educational outreach presentations to classes, student groups, and faculty/administrative groups. Evening and weekend work may be required

PRIMARY RESPONSBILITIES:

* Provide individual and group mental wellness counseling sessions in areas related to personal concerns, educational choices, social problems, and healthy lifestyles in an ethical and collaborative spirit to aid students enrolled at SUSLA persist through matriculation.

* Provide crisis counseling and respond to emergency situations as required. Evaluate and refer students for more specialized evaluation and treatment when needed.

* Develop and deliver wellness counseling programs focused on intervention and prevention-oriented topics relevant to college students. Consult and collaborate with faculty and staff on appropriate actions and assistance for students requiring special attention and the mental health issues facing college students.

* Develop affinity groups and schedule activities within the living learning community to build and sustain peer engagement.

* Engage in counseling-related activities including, but not limited to, maintaining counseling records, administering, and interpreting psychological tests/inventories where qualified.

* Properly conduct exit interviews with withdrawing and non-progressing students to determine reasons for withdrawal and methods to aid in retention by assessing the need for resources.

* Develop, in coordination with the Executive Director, unit goals, objectives, policy, and procedures for mental health services that respond to the specific needs of SUSLA and measure program effectiveness.

* Complete institutional effectiveness reports for mental health services, which includes compiling and analyzing data for monthly and annual reports. Engage in benchmarking and initiate assessment.

* Follow all State of Louisiana, Louisiana Board of Regents, and Southern University and A&M College mandates and Federal compliance regulations. Adhere to the ethics outlined by the Louisiana Licensed Professional Counselors Board of Examiners.

* May serve as an academic advisor and teach First Year Experience orientation courses.

* Enhances contributions of the Center for the Achievement for Student Outcomes and Success team to support desired SUSLA outcomes by performing all other duties and responsibilities as assigned

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

* Master's degree from an accredited college or university in Counseling, Psychology, Social Work, or related field. Hold and maintain credential as a Licensed Professional Counselor in the State of Louisiana.

* At least two years of paid post-master's clinical experience.

* Knowledge of best practices in mental health services, student development, trauma counseling, crisis intervention strategies, counseling ethical standards, and legal obligations.

* Ability to plan, organize and coordinate multiple work assignments. Ability to lead student counseling groups. Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

* Four years of paid post-master's clinical experience.

* Experience in education or higher education setting.

* Experience with student information management systems (e.g., Banner)

COMPENSATION:

$55,000- $65,000 annually. (This is a full-time position)
