In just five years, BEA has grown into a formal alliance of Black business leaders and aligned allies supporting a well-established collection of entities - including the BEA 501(c)(3) charitable Foundation, the BEA Political Action Committee (PAC), the BEA 501(c)(4) social welfare organization, and the BEA Entrepreneurs Fund.

Director of Finance and Administration
BEA is hiring its first Director of Finance and Administration. This role will lead the financial management and administration of BEA, and its related entities, BEA Foundation, BEA PAC, and BEA Ventures.

The Director of Finance and Administration will build and oversee effective and streamlined business operations for finance, accounting, planning, grants management, information technology, human resources, and compliance. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Finance and Administration will report to the CEO and work closely with the Board of Directors. They will participate actively in organization-level planning and decision-making. This is a very hands-on position that requires non-profit accounting experience. The Director of Finance and Administration will manage and coordinate with key vendors, including BEAs outsourced accountants, compliance firm, legal team, and auditors. This role will also have direct management responsibility for the Operations Manager.

The salary range for this role is $150,000 - $170,000, dependent on experience.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Financial Management & Compliance

  • Supports CEO and Finance Committee of the Board in managing financial strategy and risk; collaborates on treasury management and managing investments in partnership with investment advisors
  • Prepares financial analysis and reports for the Finance Committee and Board for quarterly Board meetings
  • Leads the annual budgeting process for all entities in collaboration with the CEO and staff, and facilitates a quarterly budget reforecasting process
  • Maintains rolling cash flow projections by entity and monitors liquidity needs across entities
  • Oversees outsourced accountants; ensures that financial reporting is accurate and reflects GAAP; works with accountants and staff to ensure books are closed monthly
  • Reviews organization and program budget vs. actual results monthly and discusses variances with staff and other stakeholders
  • Reviews and approves expenses and timesheets, ensuring coding is accurate
  • Manages PEO and payroll function in collaboration with Operations Manager; approves payroll run
  • Ensures compliance with funder requirements and prepares financial reports and budgets for funders
  • In partnership with outsourced accountants, monitors restricted grant spend down, assigns expenses to grants, and maintains restricted net asset schedule
  • Formulates and recommends sound fiscal policies, systems, procedures, tools, and controls, including a Fiscal Procedures Manual. Oversees the development of and adherence to internal control policies
  • Leads the audit process in collaboration with outsourced accountants
  • Supports CEO in managing compliance requirements for all entities with outside counsel, compliance firm, and accountants (e.g., FEC filings, tax and 990 filings, monitoring and tracking political/lobbying activity, cost-sharing, etc.)
  • Maintain and monitor compliance calendar for all entities with filing and other deadlines
  • Oversees relationships with vendors and banks; manages organization insurance coverage
  • Manages the Accounts Payable function, including processing, monitoring and administering of all consultant contracts
  • Establishes a cash management system, and an efficient credit card and expense report processing system
Administration
  • Coordinates with the CEO and key vendors, including outside counsel, recruiters, and PEO, on effective delivery of needed human resources function (e.g., compensation and benefits, employee lifecycle, and employee relations)
  • Assesses, develops and directs IT operations needs including but not limited to vendor selection, implementing and maintaining hardware and software systems
  • Supervises and mentors Operations Manager

Qualifications
  • Bachelors degree in related field required; MBA or CPA, a plus
  • Minimum 7-10 years of relevant, progressive work experience, in a nonprofit setting
  • Experience in a multi-entity organization, preferably with 501(c)4 or PAC entities
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP as applied to nonprofit accounting
  • Demonstrated experience in financial management and accounting, including experience in audit, compliance, contracts, and budget
  • Experience overseeing human resources and IT, preferred

  • Strong judgment, analytic reasoning, critical thinking, and written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to translate financial concepts to and effectively collaborate with colleagues who do not necessarily have finance backgrounds
  • Ability to develop and implement organizational systems and processes
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, small team environment and in a hands-on position
