The Structural group at SMRT is an active participant in the design of our projects from inception through construction. We participate in early conceptual work to determine the best-fit structure and impacts to the primary project goals. We are fully engaged during design through on-going coordination with our site/civil, architectural, interiors, mechanical, electrical and plumbing groups. During construction we work closely with our construction partners to maintain the quality and primary goals of our designs.

SMRT has an immediate opening for a full-time structural engineer. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development of structural systems for existing and new buildings across a variety of market sectors. In this role candidates will collaborate with a multidisciplinary project team to develop high-quality designs to advance the client's vision. For an experienced licensed candidate, with consulting engineering or A/E office experience, the opportunity exists to work independently at any of our office locations - Portland, Maine; Bangor, Maine; Andover, MA or Schenectady, NY. SMRT is committed to reducing the impact of our designs on the environment and to following the goals of the SE 2050 commitment program to achieve net zero embodied carbon structures by 2050. The successful candidate will work closely with our in-house sustainability and design excellence teams to further these goals.

Typical Responsibilities and Requirements:

  • Professional Engineer or Experienced Engineer Intern with the ability and goal to become a PE.
  • Ability to prepare structural calculations, specifications, reports, construction documents and to develop analysis models.
  • Communicate and coordinate with structural team members, architects, and other engineering disciplines, vendors, contractors, and other other consultants throughout the project.
  • Strong understanding of structural building systems (concrete, masonry, structural steel, mass timber) and how to clearly document the systems in a drawing package.
  • Conduct site investigations to document existing conditions
  • Strong communication skills , both written and spoken
  • Demonstrated ability to meet multiple deadlines on multiple projects
  • Ability to work as part of a team

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (minimum) in Civil, Structural or Architectural Engineering
  • Minimum 4 years' experience in an A/E consultant or multi-disciplinary office environment.
  • Experience with structural design software (RISA, RAM, Tekla, RAM or similar)
  • Proficient in computer aided design software, specifically Revit and AutoCad.
