Salary Range: Starts at $60,000

Reports To: Director of Academics

Language: Bilingual - Spanish, a plus

The Opportunity

We seek a dynamic, organized, and innovative instructional professional to support teachers in providing resources and instruction to 16 to 24-year-old students. The ideal candidate will have experience working with opportunity youth using the principles of positive youth development and restorative practices. In collaboration with the academic team, the Teaching and Learning Specialist is responsible for advancing innovative instruction, classroom management, small group instruction, and/or one-on-one instruction.

Key Responsibilities

60% Small Group and Individual Instruction

  • Identify students in need of interventions and implement effective advising strategies.
  • Collaborate with instructors to prepare students for standardized tests, provide targeted individual and small group instruction, and set clear learning objectives.
  • Analyze test scores and performance data to create personalized learning plans, tracking student progress, and maintaining a positive and productive learning environment.
  • Utilize technology effectively and provide academic counseling as needed.
  • Regularly report on student academic achievements and contribute to workshops and resources tailored to student needs.
  • Participate in IEP, Student of Concern meetings, and required training.

20% - Planning and Preparation

  • Collaborate with instructors in lesson planning to align roles in student support.
  • Plan student interventions based on data analysis, discussions with instructors, and input from the academic team.
  • Continuously update personalized plans with the Director of Academics and Academic Support Coordinator, reflecting new test results.
  • Engage in directed professional development.

20% Administrative Duties

  • Perform various administrative tasks including but not limited to breakfast and lunch duty, attending meetings, record-keeping, and student outreach.

The Skills Youll Need

Success as the T&L Specialist at LAYCCA requires a clear alignment to our mission, core values, and commitment to supporting older youth and young adults in obtaining their GED, industry training, and industry recognized certifications.

Candidates must meet the following qualification to be considered for this role:

  • Bachelors degree in education, or related field; Masters degree is preferred
  • Three or more years of experience teaching youth or adult learners
  • Fluency in both English and Spanish (bilingual)

The ideal candidate will also bring most of the following skills, attributes and experiences:

  • Experience working with various opportunity youth including justice involved, foster children, ELL students, and students with special needs.
  • Can work independently and with little supervision.
  • Possesses the ability to make decisions based on data or factual evidence and observation.
  • Skilled in managing courses on learning management systems (LMS) such as Google Classroom.
  • Experience delivering hybrid instruction is a plus.
  • Proficient in computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and Google Workspace.
  • Excellent attention to detail, paired with strong organizational, planning, and time management abilities.
  • Committed to the principles of positive youth development and equipped with robust interpersonal skills.

The People

The Teaching & Learning Specialist will be a member of the academic team and reports to the Director of Academics. This person will also work closely with students, staff, and the broader community on a daily basis. As over 50% of our school population identifies as Latine or Hispanic, this person should ideally be able to effectively communicate in both English and Spanish.
