About the Role:

Are you passionate about stem cell research and interested in advancing scientific discoveries? We are seeking a highly motivated and skilled individual to lead the Primary & iPS Cell Culture Shared Resource team at Janelia. In this role, you will play a crucial part in establishing research support for iPSCs and streamlining existing primary cell culture support. Drawing from your previous experience and the current scientific literature, you will develop and refine methods for differentiating iPSC into various cell types, verifying authenticity of differentiated cells, and working with the Molecular Genomics Shared Resource to support gene editing of iPSCs. You will lead a team of research technicians and specialists who will maintain, expand, freeze, and differentiate a diverse range of iPSC lines, as well as isolate tissue from model organisms to create and maintain disassociated primary cells, slice cultures, and tissue explants. You will also be responsible for shared equipment and space for primary and iPS cell culture, developing chargeback rates for the research support provided, and working with independent labs, project teams, and visiting scientists to ensure the research support provided meets the needs of their ground breaking research.

What You'll Do:Provide expertise in the development, culturing, and differentiation of induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) to support basic science research labs.Engage researchers in labs and project teams to sufficiently understand their research directions to offer effective services, collaborate on attaining project goals, and make suggestions for improvements.Establish and maintain priorities, workflows, and mechanisms for service request submission, completion, and communication to the requester.Provide oversight of shared spaces for culturing primary and iPS cells, including recommendations for space organization and equipment replacement.Develop new services for Primary & iPS Cell Culture Shared Resources in consultation with key partners, including users, staff, and Janelia leadership.Manage the operations, personnel, and budgets of the Primary & iPS Cell Culture Shared Resource.

What You Bring:Bachelor of Science degree in Cell Biology, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology, or Life Science with five years of experience culturing and differentiating iPSCs and three years of leadership and supervisory experience in a research setting. Master of Science or Ph.D. is preferred.Demonstrated proficiency establishing, passaging, maintaining, differentiating, cryopreserving, and gene editing of iPSCs.Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and optimize culture and differentiation protocols and timelines to meet the needs of multiple research groups in a timely manner.Knowledgeable of techniques to develop primary cells from a variety of organisms and tissues.Experience reviewing scientific literature, following technology development in iPSC, gene editing and related fields, and applying new technologies to enhance productivity.Demonstrated enthusiasm for challenging problems and innovative solutions.Demonstrated ability to provide leadership, motivation, clear direction, prioritization, and build trust with a diverse team in a highly dynamic environment.

Physical Requirements:

Remaining in a normal seated or standing position for extended periods of time; reaching and grasping by extending hand(s) or arm(s); dexterity to manipulate objects with fingers, for example using a keyboard; communication skills using the spoken word; ability to see and hear within normal parameters; ability to move about workspace. Compensation Range$116,569.60 (minimum) - $145,712.00 (midpoint) - $189,425.60 (maximum)

Pay Type:Annual

HHMI's salary structure is developed based on relevant job market data. HHMI considers a candidate's education, previous experiences, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity when making job offers. Typically, a new hire for this position in this location is compensated between the minimum and the midpoint of the salary range.
