Job Description of a Traffic Control Technician

A Traffic Control Technician deploys and removes traffic control devices, per MUTCD standards, to protect the public, and construction crews in the streets and highways. Traffic Control Technicians drive a large flatbed (barricade) truck that carries all required equipment. They often work in conjunction with other Technicians to accomplish large jobs such as big special event setup and closures.

Employees are expected to work weekends and mandatory workdays, as needed.

Basic Job Task

Traffic Control Technicians often work long and odd hours in a variety of weather conditions that include snow, rain and extreme heat or cold. There is a lot of lifting of heavy devices. Technicians will add and remove equipment from their trucks to the street and back again several times in a shift. They must be able to lift 50lbs or more multiple times. Technicians must also have the agility to; climb in & out of, and on & off of, the flatbed truck upwards of 100 times a day. Technicians must possess a good degree of stamina, as they will often walk miles in a single shift. At the same time, they must remain alert and keep safe around public traffic, while ensuring the safety of motorists, construction workers and themselves.

Skills for the Job

A Traffic Control Technician must be organized, analytical and attentive to whats going on around them. They should have quick decision-making abilities for situations that can arise suddenly, and unexpectedly. They must work well alone and as a member of a group. They should possess strong communication skills in order to communicate with construction workers, dispatchers, and law enforcement officials. Technicians must be professional and courteous, even when dealing with agitated public, and or contractors.

Required Credentials:

  • Valid Nevada Drivers License
  • OSHA 10 Hour Card (Construction)

Other Credentials:

  • ATSSA Traffic Control Technician Certificate
  • ATSSA Certified Flagger Card
  • ATSSA Traffic Control Supervisor (TCS) Certificate
  • OSHA 30 Hour Card (required to be promoted to TCS)

Miscellaneous:

Must have reliable transportation to and from the Masters of Barricades (MOB) office.

Responsibilities:

  • Adhere to MOBs Policies and Procedures
  • Participate in Quarterly Employee Safety Meetings (virtual, in person or e-mail)
  • Complete all required paperwork at the end of shift. Ensure all documents are easily read and accurate.
  • Must follow attendance guidelines.
  • May be required to work beyond your scheduled shift.
  • At times, will be required to work a mandatory workday.
  • Assist with flagging responsibilities.
  • Maintain proper truck stock before and at the end of shift.
  • Fuel the barricade truck at the end of shift.
  • Conduct a proper pre-trip inspection of the Company vehicle you operate. Report all defects or suspected defects to Shop personnel.
  • Keep Company vehicle clean.
  • Must follow all traffic rules and laws when operating a Company vehicle.
  • Report all incidents/collisions, no matter how minor, to your Supervisor. Ensure all reports are completed by the end of your shift.
  • Ensure vehicle loads are properly secured.
  • Properly lift all traffic control devices by bending your knees. Never lift with your back.
  • Required to use a two-way, handheld radio. Must communicate professionally and use 10 codes.
  • Setup traffic control devices according to the lineout Plan assigned to you.
  • Assist other Traffic Control Technicians when needed.
  • Must report any citations issued to you by Law Enforcement to the Safety Manager. Citations include but not limited to Company owned or leased vehicles and your personal vehicle.
  • If selected, must participate in Random Drug screening.
  • Always wear your Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
  • Update equipment status board (Message and/or Arrow Boards), as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
