Direct Support Professional - Relief (Less than 20 hours per week)
PRIMARY PURPOSE/FUNCTION OF POSITION:
Provide supervision, education, modeling, and support West Oak participants. Ensure the delivery of quality services, including documentation and communication of each individual's performance at home and in the community.
REPORTS TO: Group Life Supervisor or Program Coordinator/Manager
WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Participant's team members and agency staff.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
1) Participant Services
* Provide formal and informal training, supervision and role modeling as determined by the Interdisciplinary team and as appropriate with the Therapeutic and Preventative Skills Model.
* Support participants by respecting their rights, showing dignity and ensuring confidentiality.
* Provide participant self-medication administration training as determined by their interdisciplinary team.
* Provide medical services as prescribed and recommended by participant's physician and delegated by the Program Nurse.
* Provide appropriate role modeling of socialization and interactional skills for participants including personal hygiene, dress and conduct. Adhere to all agency policies and state & Federal accreditation standards. Utilize corrective teaching methods, motivation techniques, and positive reinforcement at each individual's level of need. Represent the participants and VOA-Dakotas in a professional & acceptable manner.
* Provide support to participants in achieving their personal outcomes.
* Know and support participant's personal choices and preferences.
* Recognize and support a participant's autonomy.
* Provide support for participants to learn about their community and to interact with others.
* Provide support to participants as individuals and assist them in being successful in what they choose to do.
* Assist participants in feeling safe and secure.
* Provide transportation of participants to and from residences and appointments as needed.
* Complete agency Vehicle Safety training by watching the video and passing the driving test.
* Follow VOA-Dakotas policies and procedures related to non-punishment interactional strategies, human rights, normalization, integration, age appropriateness, role modeling, participant choice, and least restrictive environment/approaches.
* Ensure the safety of participants, staff and the community at all times.
* Behavioral Safety - ensure appropriate supervision of participants in order to ensure their safety and that of the community. Using the least restrictive method(s) possible and only using VOA-Dakotas approved CPI techniques as necessary.
* Cleanliness - ensure standards are met.
* Identify and report any facility/maintenance needs to the Supervisor.
* Emotional Safety - ensure emotional safety needs are addressed by the team, as needed.
* Transportation Safety - ensure all safety rules and traffic laws are followed. Ensure all in vehicle are wearing seat belts. Provide safety-sensitive transportation services as needed
* Documentation/Communication
* Complete documentation on appropriate forms (BIR, Narrative, Illness & Injury, etc.) as required by VOA-Dakotas policies or as determined by the interdisciplinary team(s).
* Document all health concerns and communicate medication/medical problems to RN and Residential Coordinator(s).
* Maintain a high level of communication with supervisor and staff.
* Document all paperwork in accordance with the National School Lunch Program.
* Support Services
* Participate in meetings regarding participants as requested.
* Attend program staff meetings.
* Attend all trainings required by agency and program standards.
* Perform job responsibilities professionally, consistent with the agencies code of ethics.
* Display an understanding of agency theory base of Social Learning Theory.
2) Implementation of Therapeutic & Preventative Skills
* Facilitate effective teaching of participants through the observations, recognition and clear description of skills and behaviors.
* Support positive behavior of participants by utilizing effective praise.
* Assist the participants in recognizing the benefits of the skills they are learning through the use of rationales and role-playing.
* Provide preventive and corrective teaching opportunities to participants.
* Teach participants how to use self-control in an effort to manage oneself.
* Assist participants to resolve conflicts, plan ahead, and make decisions.
* Utilize communication concepts taught in CPI such as Supportive Verbal Skills, Active Listening Skills, and Supportive Stance.
* Other therapeutic and preventative skills training as needed.
HOURS: Relief (les than 20 hours per week) positions available all requiring flexible scheduling. Night and weekend availability required.
EXPERIENCE/EDUCATION:
A High School Diploma or GED. Excellent communication skills, teaching skills, and education/experience with developmental disabilities, mental health issues, emotional/behavioral disorders. Valid drivers license required.
