Purpose

The Explorer Program supports and enhances the mission and values of the Snohomish County Sheriff's Office, while providing the experience needed to determine whether to pursue a career in law enforcement. Many deputies and police officers got their start as an explorer.

Requirements

Membership is open to students between the ages of 14 and 20, who are mature, have good character, and maintain at least a 2.0 grade point average (GPA).

Applicants must have a reputation for honesty and trust worthiness. Felony convictions will be disqualifying. Misdemeanor and infraction convictions, depending upon the number and severity may be disqualifying.

Applications

All applicants will be required tocomplete an application (PDF)and pass a background investigation. If under the age of 18, participants must obtain parent or guardian written authorization.

Explorers have many opportunities to apply the training they receive. Members can volunteer at community events doing security work, directing traffic, fingerprinting small children, and assisting with crime prevention programs.

Activities

Members also learn first hand how police do their jobs. Deputies and detectives with special skills are invited to meetings to explain how the Sheriff's Office investigates major crimes such as homicides, narcotics violations, traffic investigations, and gang activity. Explorers also make in-person visits to such places as dispatch centers and the County Courthouse.
