ERG is seeking an experienced Ph.D. Chemists to support energetics research and development at a Department of Defense site in Indian Head, Maryland, in the Washington, DC, metro area. These positions will primarily support research, development, and scale-up of new or modified chemicals and energetic materials from laboratory scale to pilot scale and potentially to full-scale production.

Job Description:

* Plan and implement mixing, small-scale safety testing, thermal analyses, physical characterization, and explosive output characterization

* Research target molecules of interest

* Perform literature reviews of articles and patents pertaining to the target molecule

* Draft laboratory notebook procedures (LNPs) and perform experiments from the milligram to the gram-scale that ultimately achieve the desired yield and purity of the product

* Perform basic calculations that support process chemistry from the gram to kilogram-scale and provide over-sight on equipment configuration and process condition establishment decisions by scale-up engineers

* Prepare laboratory review forms (LRFs), standard operating procedures (SOPs), safety documentation, technical reports, and publication submissions regarding the research of target molecules

Qualifications and Skills:

* Minimum of Ph.D. in chemistry, chemical engineering, explosives engineering, or similar related science

* Recommended coursework in general and organic chemistry

* Coursework related to explosives and other energetic materials is a plus

* A minimum of 5 years of experience (explosives-related experience preferred)

* Strong knowledge of tools, techniques, instruments, and equipment used in analytical chemistry (e.g., spectroscopy, chromatography, titration, gravimetric and thermal analysis, wet chemistry)

* Proficiency in chemical process modeling and simulation is a plus

* An ideal candidate would have knowledge and/or experience with industrial chemical and mixing formulation for explosives ingredients, safe handling of energetics, and sensitivity testing (i.e., electrostatic discharge, friction, thermal stability)

* Strong writing and communication skills; exhibit knowledge of the theories, procedures, and analytical techniques necessary to produce reliable reviews, consultations, and conclusions

* Competence in using spreadsheet and database software to compile, analyze, and present data (e.g., Microsoft Excel, Minitab)

* Strong time management skills and the ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously

* Must currently hold or be able to obtain a Department of Defense Secret-level security clearance; Must be a U.S. citizen as this position is not eligible for Limited Access Authorizations
