The Information Sciences Group (CCS-3) at Los Alamos National Laboratory is seeking senior technical experts in the field of machine learning to join our vibrant and multidisciplinary research team. The successful applicant will be an established leader in the machine learning research community, with a reputation for innovation and leadership. Our mission is to develop and deliver novel machine-learning algorithms and implementations for extreme-scale problems.
CCS-3 invites candidates with an exemplary track record of establishing and leading successful machine-learning research programs to apply. The successful candidate is expected to be a self-starter, and will be responsible for working with group management to develop new research directions and establish new research programs.
This position will be filled at either the Scientist 3 or 4 level, depending on the skills of the selected candidate. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if the candidate is hired at the higher level.
Scientist 3 ($119,200 - $201,100)
The successful candidate will oversee and participate in research activities to develop machine-learning techniques for a variety of projects related to national security. Responsibilities will include leading R&D activities/projects related to anomaly detection, image analysis, predictive analysis, and other applied-research activities. Other reponsibilites include writing research proposals and meeting with program sponsors on a regular basis, steering research activities appropriately to ensure success, and building teams to pursue applied R&D efforts.
Scientist 4 ($143,100 - $248,200)
In addition to the responsibilities outlined at the lower level, at this level the successful candidate will be responsible for establishing new programs and funding sources in support of broad machine-learning activities for the group and laboratory.

What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
Established expertise and leadership in the field of machine learning, as evidenced by peer-reviewed publications.Evidence of strong programming skills using high-level languages such as C, C++, and/or Python.Excellent communication skills, as evidenced by publications and cover letter.Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and ability to grow and lead project teams as well as collaborate effectively in a team environment.Experience mentoring students, postdocs, and/or junior staff members.

In addition to the requirements outlined above, qualification at the higher level requires:
Nationally recognized expertise in the field of machine learning.Demonstrated ability to build and lead large project teams successfully.Demonstrated ability to define technical direction and frontiers buy conceiving, planning, and conducting research and guiding development to fruition of final products.Evidence of successful program development and proposal writing for large research efforts.
Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 6 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Master's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 12 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
Ph.D. in Computer Science, Electrical/Computer Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or related field from an accredited college or university, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.Experience with signal processing, image segmentation, and/or video analysis.Experience with classification of text-based data, natural language processing, or heterogeneous data fusion.Experience with high-performance computing, GPU programming, parallel programming, cloud computing, and related paradigms.Experience with modern machine-learning libraries and tools.Active Q or SCI clearance
Work Location: The work location for this position is hybrid and is located in Los Alamos, NM. Hybrid is defined as working partially onsite/partially offsite but within 2 hours ground commute of this location. All work locations are at the discretion of management and can change at any time with appropriate notice.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 Year.

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
