The City of Tamarac is seeking applications for a Planning and Zoning Intern

Salary: $20.00 per hour

This is a limited term temporary position and does not provide benefits.

The Planning and Zoning Student Intern position has been established for students from colleges and universities to participate in a learning exchange with the Community Development Department. The Internship is designed to give exposure to students seeking a career in local government with an emphasis on Urban and Regional Planning. The purpose of the Internship is educational in nature so that the Intern may gain career-oriented knowledge and practical experience.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF JOB
The Planning and Zoning Intern assists the Community Development Department with planning and zoning research and various duties related to customer service including the intake of applications for land development proposals, permits, and business revenue receipts. May accompany professional planning staff in the field for research purposes and observation of inspection processes of new construction. Assists with providing responses to business inquiries and property owners in conformance with the City zoning and land development ordinances. Works on special projects as assigned. Reports to the Assistant Director of Community Development or Designee.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Assists with planning and zoning research for proposed development and/or redevelopment projects to assist in preparation of staff reports, planning studies, zoning verification letters, or building permits.

Accompanies Planning and Zoning Division staff in the field to conduct filed research, zoning inspections, and verify land development conditions.

Assists the Planning and Zoning Division staff with the preparation of technical reports and agenda memorandums as required.

Assists the Planning and Zoning Division staff with the preparation and presentation of City code amendments and comprehensive plan amendments to various boards, committees and the City Commission.

Assists administrative staff with application processing tasks.

Interacts and communicates with a variety of groups and individuals including supervisors, City personnel, consultants, review boards and the public.

ADDITIONAL JOB FUNCTIONS

Performs other related duties as required.
Minimum Training and Experience

Must be currently enrolled or have satisfactorily completed course work in the prior semester at an accredited college or university with a major in Urban and Regional Planning, Urban Design, Architecture, or related area.

AICP One Path and Traditional AICP Candidates preferred but not required.

Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel & PowerPoint), Microsoft Teams, and other online meeting software.

Experience with Electronic Plan Review software, Geographic Information Systems, AutoCAD, and other digital plan creating/editing software is preferred but not required. In addition, an overview of how to incorporate these technologies into visualization techniques, presentation techniques, and data analysis is a plus. Must possess a valid Florida driver's license.
