Job Overview

Service Year Alliance is seeking a Director, Communications to lead our strategic communications efforts. The Director is responsible for Service Year Alliances external presence, including driving our thought leadership communications, creating engagement plans, and developing content and messaging for all bodies of our work. The Director will work closely with the Manager, Programs & Communications and will report to the Chief Impact Officer.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Develop and implement annual communications plans for the organization as a whole and for individual bodies of work (e.g., bridging divides, climate + workforce, Service Year Alliances 10th anniversary)
  • Provide strategic communications support across multiple bodies of work including but not limited to:
    • Write, copy-edit, and design a wide variety of products and tools including reports and toolkits, workshop and presentation slide decks, handouts and print material, digital campaigns, op-eds, press releases, organizational statements, monthly organizational newsletter, quarterly Service Year Alums newsletter, email blasts to target audiences, videos, etc.
    • Prepare talking points for Senior Leadership media opportunities and other external engagements
    • As required by contracts, grants, or other needs, work with staff to develop required written deliverables
  • Develop and coordinate an engagement plan for the annual release of polling and focus group data and learnings, to include writing and publishing a report, planning and coordinating public events and webinars, supporting Senior Leadership in disseminating information, etc.
  • Provide strategic oversight in the management of Service Year Alliances digital presence and content, including website, social media, and bulk communications to maintain Service Year Alliance voice and brand, and ensure were lifting up the voices of the next generation in all of our work
  • Manage media relations and develop and maintain contacts with media members and thought leaders
  • Engage Service Year Alliance staff and partners as thought leaders in developing and placing op-eds and interviews
  • Bring flexibility and creativity to the work; look for and embrace opportunities to improve and expand Service Year Alliances communications in mission to our vision of service years becoming part of growing up in America

Qualifications

  • 5-7 years of professional experience working in a communications position at a non profit
  • Excellent relationship building & media engagement skills
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills, including the ability to synthesize and summarize complex issues, tell stories with data, and present ideas
  • Experience managing digital content
  • Understanding of copywriting, graphic design, layout, and publishing
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective cross-functional working relationships and build connections among a variety of stakeholders and external partners
  • A learning mindset, dedicated to contributing to a culture of learning we are working to foster at SYA

Preferences

  • Experience leading a team, mentoring an individual, or serving as the point of contact for a consultant
  • Ability to engage with data sets - both quantitative and qualitative
  • Proactive, entrepreneurial attitude with a desire to innovate, develop, and implement
  • Demonstrated interest in or knowledge of the national service field
  • National service alum

Travel & Availability Requirements

Service Year Alliance is a remote organization. The majority of our leadership team currently resides in Washington, DC and that is typically where we convene for in person planning meetings or staff retreats. We aim to host two all staff, in-person events in or around the DC area annually. For this position, we have the following expectations:

  • Ability to do some travel for meetings or events. This includes 2 staff events and 2 - 4 external facing events per year.
  • Ability to maintain east coast working hours regardless of remote working location
