JOB SUMMARY:

NORC at the University of Chicago is seeking an enthusiastic, experienced, and energetic External Affairs Associate, with strong analytical skills, who is looking for their next step in a media relations career. In this newly created role, the External Affairs Associate supports and partners with the Associate Director of External Affairs to help plan, coordinate, and implement strategic external affairs initiatives and campaigns; collaborate with NORC digital and editorial communications domains to disseminate NORC s research to external stakeholders, primarily the media, and assist with Associate Director of External Affairs with the administration and analysis of NORC s thought leadership program. Additionally, the communications associate will be lead writer on corporate press releases, inbound media inquiries, and NORC s media relations firm.

Successful candidates will have outstanding verbal and written communications skills, a passion and commitment to external affairs, as well as to trustworthy research and data, and the ability to apply best-in-class communications strategies and tactics to the external affairs needs of the organization. They must enjoy speaking with representatives of the media, be eager to engage with NORC s thought and senior leaders, and be an inquisitive, goal-focused professional who embraces opportunities to work on a variety of projects across multiple research areas.

DEPARTMENT: STRATEGIC COMMUNICATIONS AND EXTERNAL AFFAIRS

Strategic Communications and External Affairs supports the entire NORC organization with expertise in corporate communications and creative services, external affairs, internal communications, and select project-level communications. Our digital work primarily supports the promotion of NORC s research and people to the public: we work with members of the media to publicize our research projects and our expertise; we support external events where NORC experts present or speak; we maintain the external NORC website, www.norc.org; we support client projects that need digital communications expertise, and we manage NORC s social media presence on Facebook and Twitter.

REQUIRED SKILLS:

Bachelors Degree is required.

Experience identifying gaps and opportunities, especially in media relations space.

Exceptional interpersonal and writing skills.

Strong, demonstrable critical reasoning, analytic, research skills.

Attention to detail and excellent follow-up.

Must demonstrate strong problem-solving capability.

Ability to work on multiple projects simultaneously, meet deadlines, and handle changing priorities.

Demonstrated success in working both independently and in project teams.

Working knowledge of the media landscape, social and traditional, and how the two interact, is a must.

Strong proficiency with MS Office software.

At least 5 years communications and/or editorial or content development experience. Prior experience using web analytic tools. i.e. web development, project planning, and optimization, is a plus.

#LI-AH1 SALARY AND BENEFITS:

The pay range for this position is $73,826 $115,210.

The budgeted pay range for this position is $75,000 $94,000.

This position is classified as regular. Regular staff are eligible for NORC s comprehensive benefits program. Benefits include, but are not limited to:
