Job Description

Under the supervision of the Security Coordinator, the custodian performs a variety of janitorial work to clean and maintain the airport terminal building and grounds.

Examples of Duties

  • Keep the airport terminal building and surrounding grounds clean and orderly.
  • Perform numerous tasks to maintain and preserve floors. Maintain floors by sweeping, mopping, scrubbing, buffing, sanding and waxing. Vacuum and keep carpeting clean especially in heavy traffic areas.
  • Quarterly perform thorough deep cleaning of all carpets.
  • Pick-up trash, empty garbage and trash containers, and keep containers clean and sanitary.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of walls, windows and furniture on a regularly scheduled basis by washing, dusting, waxing, and buffing.
  • Maintain restrooms in a clean and sanitary manner in order to promote hygiene; keep soap, toilet tissue, paper towels, and any other dispensables filled; unplug stopped up drains, toilets, and urinals.
  • Properly utilize a variety of tools and equipment including brooms, mops, cleaners, buffers, keys, disinfectants, insecticides, vacuum cleaners, carpet cleaners, scrubbers in order to maintain a clean and orderly facility.
  • Maintain proper security of all buildings and offices accessed by locking doors and windows.
  • Perform emergency custodial duties.
  • Keep and process records such as work orders, time sheets, check lists, incident reports, and progress reports when requested.
  • Replace light bulbs and fluorescent tubes as required.
  • Repair and replace restroom dispensers and perform routine operator maintenance on janitorial equipment.
  • Work evenings and extended days as required.


ADDITIONAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Provide instruction to other employees of this or a similar job classification in all aspects of procedure and technique relating to the duties required by this job description unless such instruction requires a specialized certification which the employee doing the training does not have.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

The Airport Custodian must possess:
  • Knowledge of current practices, procedures, and techniques used in cleaning, sanitation and preservation of facilities.
  • Knowledge of solvents, cleaning agents, and detergents for proper application to appropriate surfaces.
  • Knowledge of safety hazards and preventative maintenance.
  • The ability to use cleaning equipment such as electric buffers, floor scrubbers, wet and dry vacuums, shampoo machines, hand tools, and other power equipment in the performance of routine cleaning. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a custodial team.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES INCLUDE:
  • Must be able to hear.
  • Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to use hands to finger, handle, or operate objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch; and taste or smell.
  • Each of the listed activities also requires standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, and climbing on stools and ladders. Lifting, moving, holding, and carrying a variety of cleaning, rental, and recreational equipment and boxes weighing up to eighty (80) pounds.
  • Cleaning, mopping, vacuuming and shoveling.
  • Must be physically able to operate a variety of machinery and equipment. Standing for long periods of time and using cleaning equipment.
  • May be exposed to heat, cold, odors, smoke, toxic agents, noise, vibrations, humidity, dusts and/or intense light while performing custodial services.

Requirements

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
  • Graduation from high school or GED required. Knowledge of large facility custodial procedures preferred.
  • Prior custodial experience and recent experience working with and around the general public required.

Any combination of related education and/or related experience will be considered if the candidate possesses the demonstrated ability.
