Roving Park Naturalists perform interpretive duties for home school programs, scout badge programs, animal programs, school programs, and "critter corner" programs at waterparks, campgrounds, light shows, and special events under the general direction of the Park Manager and in coordination with the NOVA Parks Roving Park Naturalist. Pay Rate: $18.00 Major Duties/Specific Tasks

  • Implement programs based on standards of learning and scout badge requirements on local flora and fauna.
  • Interact with the public at a variety of NOVA Parks sites to include waterparks, campgrounds, summer camps, fall festival, light shows, and other special events.
  • Interpret, care for, and handle live animals.
  • Answer questions and facilitate nature encounters.
  • Create and update program plans.
  • Enter programs in Active Network.
  • Use NOVA Parks tools to create marketing materials to include flyers, social media, and web events.
  • Document participation and other record keeping.
  • Perform other related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

  • At least two years of education in some natural resource field.
  • General knowledge of biology and ecology.
  • At least a basic knowledge of flora and fauna of Northern Virginia.
  • Ability to identify native plants and invasives.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with the public and staff members.
  • Ability to prepare and present accurate reports.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions.
  • Availability to work additional hours during peak operating times, holidays, nights and weekends.
  • Possession of or ability to obtain valid VA driver's license.
  • Certification or ability to obtain certification in CPR and first aid and AED.
  • Regular and predictable attendance is an essential function of the position.
